How to convert igs to dwg file

A supplier, legacy CAD system, or AutoCAD-based workflow may provide an IGES model when the receiving application requires DWG for editing, drafting, or document control. The conversion transfers geometry, but normally does not restore the source model’s feature history, constraints, or parametric relationships.

What the IGS format is

IGS and IGES refer to the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification; .igs and .iges are equivalent filename extensions. IGES is a neutral, usually ASCII, exchange format for curves, wireframes, trimmed surfaces, and, in some files, solid geometry.

IGES files commonly come from CATIA, SolidWorks, Siemens NX, Creo, Rhino, and older mechanical or industrial CAD systems. They are used when the recipient cannot open the sender’s native format or when a legacy system is the source of the model.

What the DWG format is

DWG is the native drawing and design format associated with AutoCAD. Depending on the application and export settings, it can contain 2D lines, arcs, layers, blocks, text, dimensions, 3D surfaces, meshes, and ACIS-based solids.

DWG is appropriate when the recipient must edit the file in AutoCAD or another DWG-compatible CAD system, insert the geometry into an existing drawing, add production documentation, or comply with a specified DWG release. It is not automatically a better 3D interchange format than STEP: DWG exports often prioritize drafting and AutoCAD compatibility.

How to convert IGS to DWG

Using Rhino

Rhino is a practical desktop option for both 2D and 3D IGES-to-DWG work.

  1. Open Rhino and select File → Open; choose model.igs or model.iges.
  2. In the IGES import dialog, confirm the model units and use a tolerance appropriate for the part size. If the file imports at the wrong scale, correct the units before exporting rather than scaling by guesswork.
  3. Inspect the result. Use Rhino’s _ShowEdges command to find naked edges, and check for missing faces, duplicate geometry, bad trims, and unwanted construction entities. Join or repair surfaces when the receiving application requires a closed solid.
  4. For a 3D deliverable, select the required objects and choose File → Export Selected; for the whole model, use File → Save As. Select AutoCAD Drawing (*.dwg).
  5. In the DWG export options, select the required release and preserve the needed geometry type—curves, surfaces, meshes, or ACIS solids. Do not choose a 2D-only option for a 3D part.
  6. If the required result is a drawing rather than a 3D model, create views with Rhino’s _Make2D command and export those curves. An IGES model does not contain AutoCAD-style title blocks, dimensions, or drawing layouts that can be preserved automatically.
  7. Open the DWG in the recipient’s CAD application and verify units, a known dimension, layer assignments, curve locations, surface closure, and solid validity.

Using AutoCAD or Autodesk design software

Full AutoCAD installations that expose IGES import can use Insert → Import or the IMPORT command, select the IGES file, inspect the imported geometry, and then use File → Save As to choose the required DWG release. Product editions and versions differ; AutoCAD LT and drawing-focused products may not provide the same 3D import and repair tools.

Autodesk Inventor can open IGES geometry and can create a DWG drawing from the imported component. Fusion can upload IGES, create a drawing, and export that drawing as DWG where the installed account and workspace support those commands. These workflows generally produce a drawing DWG, not a native parametric DWG model with the original feature tree.

Using an online converter

CAD Exchanger Cloud and services based on Aspose.CAD provide browser-based CAD conversion workflows that may include IGES input and DWG output. Upload the file, select DWG, choose the available version and 2D/3D options, convert it, and inspect the downloaded result in the target CAD application. Online interfaces and supported geometry options vary by service and subscription, so confirm that the service supports 3D IGES output before uploading a production model.

Do not send confidential designs, export-controlled data, customer models, or proprietary tooling to an online service without approval of its security, retention, and geographic-processing policies. A desktop converter is preferable when the source geometry is sensitive or batch processing is required.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • IGES often contains separate surfaces. Gaps, bad trims, and inconsistent surface normals can prevent a valid solid from being created. Heal or stitch the model before export when the software provides those tools.
  • Design intelligence is usually lost. Feature trees, sketches, constraints, named parameters, assembly relationships, and native history do not normally survive. The DWG contains translated geometry rather than an editable copy of the original design process.
  • Check units explicitly. IGES unit metadata may be absent or interpreted differently by the importer. Measure a known feature after import and again in the exported DWG.
  • Expect representation changes. Colors, layers, line weights, spline definitions, trimmed surfaces, meshes, and solid entities can change between exporters and DWG readers. Test one representative file before converting a batch.
  • Choose the DWG release for the recipient. Newer releases may fail to open in older AutoCAD-compatible software; older releases can simplify or omit newer 3D entities. The ODA File Converter can change the version of an existing DWG, but it does not convert IGES geometry to DWG.
  • Validate the actual deliverable. A file that opens is not necessarily geometrically correct. Check scale, orientation, layer content, visible and hidden objects, closed solids, and critical dimensions in the software that will consume the DWG.
