Convert BPN to DWG

BPN is not a widely standardized CAD exchange format. In many cases, a .bpn file is a project-specific or vendor-specific file rather than a universal drawing file. That means the exact contents can vary by software: it may contain drawing data, annotations, geometry, project settings, or other application-specific information.

Because of that, the first step is to identify which program created the file. Conversion options depend on the original application, and in some cases a .bpn file may not be a CAD drawing at all.

Target format

DWG is a widely used CAD drawing format and the native file format of AutoCAD. It supports 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, dimensions, text, and other drafting data. DWG is commonly used for architectural plans, mechanical drawings, civil engineering layouts, and general technical documentation.

Converting to DWG is useful when you need to edit the file in mainstream CAD software, share it with consultants, or integrate it into a professional drafting workflow.

How to convert BPN to DWG

Because BPN is often proprietary, the most reliable method is to use the original software that created the file. If that program can export directly to DWG, that is the best option. If not, export to DXF first and then convert or save that file as DWG in a CAD program that supports DWG writing.

1. Open the BPN file in its native application. If you do not know the source program, check the file origin, ask the sender, or inspect the file association on your system.
2. Look for an export or save option. Common menu paths include File → Export, File → Save As, or File → Save a Copy.
3. Select DWG if it is available. If DWG is not offered, export to DXF first.
4. Open the DXF in a DWG-capable CAD program such as AutoCAD, BricsCAD, or DraftSight, then save or export it as DWG if your software supports that format.
5. Verify the result by opening the converted file in a DWG viewer or editor and checking layers, scale, linework, text, and dimensions.

Desktop software options:

• The original BPN-authoring application — best chance of preserving geometry and metadata.
• AutoCAD — ideal for opening DXF files and saving to DWG.
• BricsCAD — a strong DWG-compatible alternative for editing and saving CAD files.
• DraftSight — useful for DWG/DXF workflows, depending on your license and version.
• LibreCAD — good for 2D DXF work, but it does not write DWG natively.

Online converters: If you do not have access to the source software, reputable online services such as CloudConvert or Convertio may help only if they support your specific BPN variant. Upload the file, choose DWG as the output, and test the result carefully. Because .bpn is uncommon, online support may be limited or unavailable.

Limitations and compatibility

Conversion quality depends on the source application. If the BPN file contains proprietary objects, custom symbols, embedded references, or nonstandard metadata, some information may be lost during conversion, especially if the workflow requires an intermediate DXF export.

DWG version compatibility also matters. Some CAD programs can only write older DWG versions, while others can read newer ones but not save them. If the recipient uses a specific CAD release, choose the closest compatible DWG version during export if the software allows it.

If the BPN file does not open in any known application, it may not be a CAD drawing, and conversion to DWG may not be possible without the correct vendor software or file specification from the creator.

Important: The earlier assumption that .bpn files can be recovered through ArchiCAD is not reliable as a general rule. ArchiCAD is not a universal BPN recovery tool, so only use it if you know the file was created by a compatible ArchiCAD workflow or add-on.
