Convert RVT to DWG

Instructions how to to export Revit projects to DWG format. Possible rvt to dwg conversion solutions.

How to convert rvt to dwg file

  • CAD

Everything points to the fact that rvt to dwg conversion is typically searched by users interested in exporting content from Autodesk Revit Architecture files (RVT format) to standard DWG format, often in case they do not have access to Revit itself.

RVT is Autodesk Revit's native file format, used primarily for building information modeling (BIM) and used to store highly detailed, multidimensional building models. Export to DWG is certainly possible, but also means that all specific BIM data will be lost and only 2D/3D designs will be exported thi way.

Exporting RVT files with Revit

It is not difficult to export RVT format to DWG using Revit, considering it is one of the default export options. The process might vary slightly depending on the version of Revit you are using, but the general workflow remains consistent across different versions.

  1. Launch Autodesk Revit and open the RVT file you wish to convert.

  2. Choose the Export Option:

    • Navigate to the FileExport (CAD Formats) ► DWG.
  3. Set Export Parameters:

    • Customize any settings and options you are presented with in the Export CAD Formats dialog box. Here are some examples:
      • Select the Views/Sheets to Export: Choose the specific views or sheets from your Revit model that you want to export as DWG.
      • Setup: Modify the DWG export setup to control how Revit elements are mapped to DWG layers, linetypes, colors, and other properties. You can create new setups or modify existing ones.
      • Options for Export: You may have options like exporting room boundaries, specifying coordinate system, and more, depending on your version of Revit.
  4. Save your file

    • Choose a location and file name for your .dwg fie as required and define all parameters for the export
    • click OK or Export to start the conversion process and the .dwg file will be created at your designated location.

And how to export RVT files without Revit ?

Professional 3rd party BIM solutions

In case you do not have access to Revit, you have to rely on alternative BIM solutions that include software such as Bentley Systems’ MicroStationGraphisoft ArchiCAD,Trimble Tekla Structures or Vectorworks Architect and of course alternative software from Autodesk that work with Revit files, for example BIM 360.

Free BIM software

When it comes to free BIM software options like, FreeCAD, BlenderBIM or B-processor, these unfortunately do not support RVT format. The usually work around is to use IFC format instead, but that requires to first export the RVT file to IFC format, which will require access to Revit or any professional tools anyway.

BIM converters

Last but not least option is to use one of the dedicated BIM converters like FME by Safe Software or Tekla BIMsight.
