AutoCAD version

Older AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT open only drawings saved in their own or an earlier version. Auto keeps the file's version (DWT and BAK are only renamed) and saves DXF as 2018.

A DWS file is often encountered when an AutoCAD drawing must be checked against office or project drafting standards, while a DWG is required for normal drawing editing and exchange. Saving the standards file as DWG can make it open as a regular AutoCAD drawing database, but it does not create design geometry that was never present in the source.

What the DWS format is

DWS is AutoCAD’s drawing standards format. It stores drafting standards such as approved layers, linetypes, dimension styles, multileader styles, and text styles for comparison with project drawings.

AutoCAD creates DWS files through the standards workflow, commonly from a drawing template or an existing DWG using Save As and selecting the AutoCAD Standards file type. The CHECKSTANDARDS command uses a DWS file to identify noncompliant settings in the active drawing; it does not convert the active drawing or modify it automatically.

What the DWG format is

DWG is the native CAD drawing format used by AutoCAD and supported by many other CAD applications. It can contain model-space and paper-space geometry, blocks, layers, annotations, dimensions, layouts, referenced data, and drawing settings.

A DWG is the appropriate target when the file must be edited as a drawing, opened by a CAD application that does not accept DWS, inserted into another project, or retained as a normal drawing database. The conversion cannot add lines, solids, blocks, or layouts if the DWS source contains only standards definitions.

How to convert DWS to DWG

The most reliable method is Autodesk AutoCAD or compatible desktop software that can open the standards database and save it as a drawing:

  1. Make a backup copy of the original source.dws.
  2. Open the DWS file in AutoCAD with File → Open. If AutoCAD does not list DWS files, choose All Files in the file-type filter.
  3. Use File → Save As, or enter the SAVEAS command.
  4. Set the file type to an AutoCAD Drawing version, choose a destination, and save the result as converted.dwg.
  5. Close and reopen the DWG, then verify the layer, linetype, dimension-style, multileader-style, and text-style definitions in the drawing’s management dialogs.

The conversion can also be attempted with the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. For a standards file containing proprietary AutoCAD data, desktop AutoCAD remains the safer option because it can preserve and expose the standards definitions for verification.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A DWS file is not normally a drawing exchange file. Its DWG output may open as a largely empty drawing containing standards resources rather than the project geometry users expect. To produce a design DWG, open the actual project drawing and save that DWG directly; use the DWS only as the standards reference.

Do not rely on changing .dws to .dwg in the filename. Use SAVEAS so the file is written with the intended format and header information.

When saving to an older DWG release, AutoCAD may alter or remove objects and properties introduced in newer releases. Keep the native-version copy, select the recipient’s required DWG version, and run AUDIT after conversion if AutoCAD reports database errors.
