What the DWT format is

DWT is an AutoCAD Drawing Template file. AutoCAD uses it to store reusable drawing standards, including units, layers, dimension styles, text styles, layouts, title blocks, plot settings, and sometimes sample geometry.

Autodesk AutoCAD creates and uses DWT files; compatible CAD applications such as DraftSight may also open them. You usually encounter DWT files when starting a new technical drawing from a company or project template. Opening a template generally creates a new drawing based on it rather than editing the original template in place.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator Artwork, the native vector format of Adobe Illustrator. It stores paths, fills, strokes, type, clipping masks, placed images, artboards, and Illustrator-specific editing data.

AI is suitable when the result must be refined for print, illustration, signage, diagrams, or other vector artwork. It preserves scalable paths better than a raster export, but it does not preserve AutoCAD template behavior, CAD constraints, dimension intelligence, plot configurations, or all specialized CAD objects.

How to convert DWT to AI

Recommended method: AutoCAD to vector PDF to Illustrator

1. Make a copy of the DWT file.
2. In AutoCAD, create a drawing from the template with New → Use a Template, then select the DWT file. If the template already contains the required geometry, save the resulting drawing as a DWG.
3. Check the drawing units, layer visibility, lineweights, text, hatches, viewport scale, and paper size. Remove construction geometry that should not appear in the artwork.
4. Use Output → Export to PDF or Plot. Select the DWG To PDF.pc3 printer, choose the required layout or window, enable vector output, and set the intended paper size and scale.
5. In Adobe Illustrator, choose File → Open and select the exported PDF. Select the correct page and import it at the document’s intended size.
6. Check lineweights, fonts, clipping, and page dimensions. Choose File → Save As, select Adobe Illustrator, and save the result with the .ai extension.

PDF is usually the most reliable interchange route because AutoCAD can publish precise vector geometry and Illustrator can open PDF pages as editable artwork. If the source contains several layouts, export each required layout as a separate PDF page or file before importing.

DXF alternative for editable CAD geometry

1. Create a drawing from the DWT and save it as DXF with Application menu → Save As → Other Formats.
2. Choose a compatible DXF version, such as AutoCAD 2013 or 2018, and keep the drawing units documented.
3. In Illustrator, choose File → Open and select the DXF file. Set the scale and unit options in the DXF import dialog.
4. Inspect the imported paths, then use File → Save As and select AI.

DXF can provide more direct access to line and curve geometry, but import behavior varies by Illustrator version and DXF content. Quality and compatibility limitations

• A DWT may contain only standards and layouts, not finished geometry. Converting it will not create artwork that is absent from the template.
• PDF output can preserve visible vectors and appearance but may combine or reorganize CAD layers. DXF may preserve geometric entities more directly but can lose fills, layout presentation, text formatting, and hatches.
• AutoCAD proxy objects, dynamic blocks, constraints, annotative objects, 3D solids, external references, and specialized fonts may be omitted, flattened, or substituted.
• Illustrator may convert CAD dimensions and text into ordinary paths or imported objects rather than editable CAD annotations. Review scale by measuring a known dimension after import.
• For production printing, embed or outline fonts after checking licensing, and inspect thin lines at the final output size. Save the original DWT and intermediate DWG, PDF, or DXF files because AI is not a lossless container for AutoCAD data.
