What the DWT format is
DWT is the native template format used by Autodesk AutoCAD and compatible CAD programs such as BricsCAD. It stores reusable drawing standards, including units, layers, dimension styles, text styles, blocks, layouts, page setups, and optionally title-block geometry.
You encounter DWT files when starting a new drawing from an office or project template. A DWT is not normally the final design file: the CAD program uses it to create a new drawing, usually saved as .dwg. A template may contain no model geometry, so converting it to a printable format can produce only its layouts, title block, and other predefined objects.
What the PS format is
PS is a PostScript file containing page-description instructions for rendering text, vector lines, fills, and raster images. CAD users send PS files to PostScript printers, RIPs, commercial print systems, and prepress applications.
PostScript preserves scalable vector output and supports precise page positioning, line weights, colors, and paper sizes. It does not preserve CAD editing features such as layers, constraints, associative dimensions, blocks as editable objects, or model-space metadata.
How to actually convert DWT to PS
Using AutoCAD
- Open AutoCAD and choose File → New.
- Select the
.dwttemplate. AutoCAD creates a new drawing based on that template. - Add or verify the geometry, title block, and layout that must appear in the output. If the template contains several layouts, activate the one to plot.
- Run the
PLOTcommand or choose Output → Plot. - In the plotter or printer list, select an installed PostScript driver. If none is available, create one through Application menu → Print → Manage Plotters → Add-A-Plotter Wizard, then choose a PostScript-capable system printer or driver.
- Set the paper size, orientation, plot area, scale, plot style table, and output quality. Use Layout for a paper-space sheet, or select a window if only part of the drawing is required.
- Enable Plot to file, choose the output location, and give the file a
.psextension if AutoCAD does not add it automatically. - Open the resulting PS file in a PostScript-compatible viewer or send it to the target print workflow.
For a template that must remain available as a CAD file, save the working drawing separately as .dwg before plotting. Plotting does not modify the original DWT.
Using the built-in online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the DWT, select PS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file. This method is suitable when the service can interpret the template contents and the required page setup does not depend on a local AutoCAD plotter configuration.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
The PS result depends mainly on the template's layout and plot settings, not just on its file extension. A DWT containing styles but no geometry may generate a blank page or only a title block. For predictable results, create a drawing from the template and configure the layout in AutoCAD before plotting.
Check the plot style table, lineweight settings, TrueType or SHX font availability, and paper dimensions. Missing fonts can be substituted, and unsupported transparency, gradients, proxy objects, custom entities, or embedded raster data may render differently. A PS file is intended for output; retain the original DWT or resulting DWG when later CAD editing is required.
