What the DWT format is

DWT is the AutoCAD drawing-template format. It stores reusable CAD settings such as layers, dimension styles, text styles, title blocks, layouts, units, plot settings, and sometimes starter geometry.

AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and Autodesk vertical products such as Civil 3D create and open DWT files. You encounter them when starting standardized drawings through New or when distributing company drafting templates. A DWT is not necessarily a finished drawing; it may contain only standards and no visible geometry.

What the SVG format is

SVG is an XML-based vector format for two-dimensional paths, shapes, text, fills, strokes, and images. Browsers, Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, and many documentation systems can display it without rasterizing the geometry.

SVG is useful for web diagrams, scalable technical illustrations, lightweight previews, and vector editing. It preserves resolution-independent linework, but it does not preserve AutoCAD-specific objects, layer behavior, dimension associativity, layouts, or most CAD metadata.

How to convert DWT to SVG

Using AutoCAD

1. Make a backup copy of the DWT and open it in AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT.
2. Save a working drawing with File → Save As, selecting the DWG format. This prevents changes to the original template and gives the drawing a conventional CAD container.
3. Check the model or layout you want to publish. Freeze unwanted layers, resolve or bind required external references, confirm units, and set the intended lineweights.
4. Run the AutoCAD command EXPORTSVG, if that command is available in your release, and choose the relevant drawing area or layout. Save the resulting .svg file.

SVG export commands and options vary by AutoCAD release. If your installation does not provide EXPORTSVG, create a vector PDF through Output → Plot or File → Export → PDF, then open the PDF in Inkscape and use File → Save As to select Plain SVG. Plot at the required paper size and scale, and disable raster output options.

Quality and compatibility limits

A DWT may contain no drawing geometry, so a valid conversion can produce an empty or nearly empty SVG. Layouts, title blocks, and plot settings can also cause the SVG to represent a paper-space view rather than the full model.

AutoCAD fonts may be substituted if the target system lacks the original SHX or TrueType fonts. Convert text to outlines in an SVG editor when exact appearance matters, but expect the text to stop being editable as text. Hatches, proxy objects, 3D solids, gradients, wipeouts, associative dimensions, and external references may be simplified, omitted, or converted into ordinary paths.

Check the SVG viewBox, physical units, line joins, line caps, and stroke widths after conversion. SVG viewers can interpret CAD-style thin lines differently, and very large drawings can create files with thousands of individual path elements.
