Free online STP to SVG converter

Mechanical CAD systems exchange models as STEP, but documentation, browser graphics, and cutting software often require SVG. Converting the file produces a 2D vector view that can be edited or shared without distributing the original 3D CAD model.

What the STP format is

STP and STEP are filename extensions for ISO 10303, a neutral CAD exchange format. STEP can contain precise 3D solids, surfaces, assemblies, part relationships, and, depending on the application protocol, additional product or manufacturing data.

Mechanical engineers, manufacturers, suppliers, and CAD users exchange STEP files when transferring parts or assemblies between systems from different vendors. Programs such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion, and FreeCAD can import or export them. An STP file is intended to remain editable as CAD geometry, not as a drawing or illustration.

What the SVG format is

SVG is an XML-based 2D vector format that stores paths, lines, curves, fills, text, clipping paths, and related graphic properties. It is supported by web browsers, Inkscape, illustration software, documentation tools, and many plotting or cutting workflows.

SVG graphics remain resolution-independent when scaled. An STP conversion normally creates one selected projection—such as front, top, side, or isometric—with visible and optionally hidden edges. It does not preserve the source model as an editable 3D solid.

How to convert STP to SVG

Using FreeCAD and TechDraw

1. Open FreeCAD and choose File → Open to load the .stp or .step file. Check the model tree to confirm that the required parts of an assembly imported correctly.
2. Switch to the TechDraw workbench and create a page with TechDraw → Insert Page using Template. Select a suitable template, such as A4 or Letter.
3. Select the body, part, or assembly object in the model tree and choose TechDraw → Insert View. Set the view direction, scale, line display, and hidden-line settings in the view properties. Use orthographic directions for engineering drawings or an isometric direction for a general view.
4. Add more views, section views, dimensions, or annotations if required. Review line widths and hidden-edge visibility before exporting.
5. Select the TechDraw page and choose File → Export. Save the output with an .svg extension. The exported SVG contains the drawing page and its views, rather than the original STEP model.

TechDraw is preferable to a simple viewport export when the result needs controlled projection, multiple views, page size, annotations, or drawing-scale settings. Menu names and available view properties can vary between FreeCAD releases.

Using the built-in converter

You can convert an STP file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the file, select SVG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. This approach is suitable for a quick projection, but it may use a default camera direction and provide no controls for hidden lines, page layout, assemblies, dimensions, or annotations. Do not upload confidential or export-controlled CAD data unless the service’s handling policy permits it.

Quality and compatibility limits

SVG cannot retain STEP solids, parametric features, assembly constraints, native 3D topology, manufacturing tolerances, or CAD history as editable CAD objects. Keep the original STP file as the authoritative source for engineering changes and manufacturing measurements.

Curved faces are represented by projected curves or approximated paths. If the conversion tool exposes tessellation or projection-accuracy settings, increase them for small holes, fillets, and closely spaced edges. Inspect the SVG at high zoom for gaps, duplicate lines, clipped geometry, and unwanted hidden edges.

Confirm the exported view, units, scale, and page size in the receiving application. SVG may specify millimeters or other physical units, but applications can interpret the viewBox, page dimensions, and stroke widths differently. Text can also change appearance when the original fonts are unavailable; convert text to paths when consistent display matters more than editable text.
