A slicer, 3D printer, mesh editor, or rapid-prototyping system may require an .stl file when the available CAD model is .stp. Conversion makes the model usable by those applications, but changes editable CAD geometry into a polygon mesh.
What the STP format is
STP, also called STEP, is a standardized CAD exchange format defined by ISO 10303. It stores precise boundary-representation geometry, including solids, surfaces, curves, assemblies, and product structure, rather than a fixed triangle mesh.
CAD programs such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion, FreeCAD, CATIA, Siemens NX, and Autodesk Inventor can import or export STEP files. STP is commonly used to transfer engineering parts between different CAD systems, receive supplier models, and distribute manufacturer components.
What the STL format is
STL represents an object's outer surface with triangular facets. It is supported by most 3D-printing slicers, mesh-repair utilities, 3D scanners, and additive-manufacturing software.
Its main advantage is compatibility: the recipient does not need the original CAD application or feature history. STL does not preserve sketches, parametric features, assembly relationships, material data, colors, or dependable unit information. Binary STL is normally preferable for printing because it is smaller; ASCII STL is human-readable but substantially larger.

Convert with FreeCAD
- Open FreeCAD and choose File → Open to load the
.stpor.stepfile. - In the model tree, select the required solid or solids. Hide construction geometry and exclude parts that should not be included.
- Switch to the Mesh workbench and choose Meshes → Create mesh from shape. Menu names can vary by FreeCAD version.
- Set the tessellation quality. Use a smaller linear deviation for accurate curved surfaces and a smaller angular deviation when cylindrical or rounded surfaces appear faceted.
- Select the generated mesh and choose File → Export. Save it with an
.stlextension; choose binary STL if FreeCAD provides an encoding option. - Open the result in a slicer or mesh checker and verify its dimensions, orientation, and watertight status.
Most CAD programs provide a similar workflow: import the STEP model, select the bodies to export, set chordal or angular tessellation tolerances, and use File → Export or Save as for STL. The exact menu names and available quality controls depend on the program.
Quality and compatibility limits
Tessellation settings determine conversion quality. A coarse mesh produces visible facets and greater dimensional deviation; an excessively fine mesh creates a large file and may slow slicers without improving the printed result. Set the tolerance according to the part's smallest relevant feature and the printer's required accuracy.
Confirm the source units before exporting and measure the STL afterward. STEP stores unit information, but the STL specification does not define units, so a slicer may interpret the same numerical dimensions as millimeters or inches. Correct the scale in the slicer if necessary.
STEP assemblies may import as multiple bodies or disconnected solids. Export only the intended parts, and check how the target slicer handles separate shells. Run the STL through a mesh checker if it contains open edges, inverted normals, self-intersections, duplicate facets, or non-manifold geometry.
Keep the original .stp file. STL contains only a tessellated surface and cannot be edited like the source CAD model or regenerated reliably after design changes.
