How to convert stl to stp file

A 3D scanner or slicer may produce an STL when a CAD, CAM, or manufacturing system requires a STEP file for exchange or solid operations. Conversion must rebuild the triangle mesh as CAD boundary-representation geometry; renaming .stl to .stp does not change the format.

What the STL format is

STL stores a three-dimensional surface as triangular facets. 3D scanners, slicers, CAD export tools, and mesh editors commonly create it for 3D printing, rapid prototyping, inspection, and visualization.

STL files can be ASCII or binary. Both variants describe a mesh rather than native CAD surfaces and usually contain no editable features, parametric dimensions, assembly structure, material definitions, or dependable unit information. Binary STL files may include limited header and attribute data, but this does not restore CAD design information.

What the STP format is

STP is a commonly used filename extension for STEP, the ISO 10303 CAD exchange format. Depending on its application protocol and the exporting software, a STEP file can contain boundary-representation solids, surfaces, curves, assemblies, product metadata, and units.

STEP is supported by applications such as FreeCAD, SolidWorks, Fusion, Inventor, CATIA, and many CAM systems. Its solid and surface representation is better suited than STL for dimensioning, Boolean operations, machining, and assembly exchange. An STL conversion does not recreate the original sketches, constraints, feature tree, parametric history, or design intent.

How to convert STL to STP

Using FreeCAD

  1. Open FreeCAD and choose File → Open to import the STL.
  2. Switch to the Part workbench and select the mesh in the model tree.
  3. Choose Part → Create shape from mesh. Set a tolerance appropriate to the model. A smaller tolerance preserves more mesh detail but can create a very large or unreliable shape; a larger tolerance can close small gaps while changing geometry.
  4. Select the resulting shape and choose Part → Convert to solid. This succeeds only when the surface is closed and topologically valid.
  5. Optionally select the solid and choose Part → Refine shape to remove redundant seam edges.
  6. Choose File → Export, select STEP, and save the file with an .stp or .step extension.
  7. Reopen the exported file in FreeCAD or the target CAD system. Confirm that it is recognized as a solid, has the expected dimensions, and contains no missing faces.

Using 101convert.com

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the STL, select STP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Do not upload confidential, proprietary, or export-controlled geometry unless the service's data handling and terms meet your requirements.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The result is usually a faceted STEP boundary-representation solid in which STL triangles become planar faces. STEP compatibility does not make the surface smooth or restore cylinders, fillets, sketches, constraints, or editable feature history. A smooth, editable CAD model normally requires reverse engineering or remodeling from measured geometry.

The source mesh should be watertight: it needs closed edges, consistently oriented faces, and no self-intersections, duplicate triangles, internal surfaces, or non-manifold edges. Repair holes and other defects in a mesh editor or FreeCAD before creating the shape. These defects commonly cause solid conversion to fail.

STL generally does not specify units. Verify whether its coordinates represent millimetres, inches, or another unit before conversion, then check a known measurement in the exported STEP file. A file can be numerically valid but physically mis-scaled.

High-resolution meshes can produce STEP files with thousands or millions of faces, making them larger than the STL and slow for CAD or CAM software to load. Reduce or remesh the source only when the required dimensional tolerance allows it. STL colors, normals, and other mesh-specific attributes may not survive conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Is the STL to STP converter free?

Yes, converting STL to STP on 101convert.com is completely free. No registration, email address or installation is required. If you need a higher file size limit or want to convert more files at once, see our plans.

How large can my STL file be?

You can upload STL files up to 500 MB and convert up to 5 files at once in a single batch.

What happens to my uploaded files?

Files are processed automatically and deleted from our servers within a few minutes after conversion. We never view or share your files.

Do I need to install any software to convert STL to STP?

No. The STL to STP conversion runs entirely online in your browser and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Did the conversion fail?

In most cases, the cause is an incorrect file format. Please upload a valid STL file for this STL to STP conversion. Occasionally, the issue may be on our side. We analyze recurring conversion failures and disable or fix the converter if we detect a defect.

Does converting STL to STP make a smooth, editable CAD model?

No, it usually creates a STEP representation of the STL triangles rather than recovering the original smooth surfaces or parametric features. The result may be usable as a solid, but it remains faceted and is not normally editable like a feature-based CAD model.

Will STL to STP preserve the model's dimensions and units?

The numeric coordinates can be preserved, but STL files do not reliably store measurement units. If the source unit is interpreted incorrectly, the resulting STEP model can have the wrong scale even though its shape is otherwise unchanged.

Why does my STL fail to convert to STP?

The STL usually needs to be a closed, watertight mesh without gaps, self-intersections, duplicate faces, or non-manifold edges. Open or damaged meshes cannot always be turned into a valid STEP solid.

Will STL to STP recover the original curves, holes, and surfaces?

No, conversion follows the triangular mesh, so curved areas and edges generally become many planar faces. It cannot reliably restore the original design intent, exact curves, feature history, colors, or other information that was not stored in the STL.
