A WEBP image is useful when an STL model must be shown in a browser, catalog, listing, documentation page, or message without requiring a 3D viewer. The conversion is a render of the 3D mesh into a 2D image, not a direct preservation of the model's geometry.

What the STL format is

STL is a 3D mesh format that represents a surface with triangular facets. It normally stores vertex coordinates and facet normals, but it does not reliably contain materials, textures, scene lighting, cameras, or animation; most STL files also do not preserve color.

3D printers and slicers commonly use STL for manufacturing models. CAD and modeling applications such as Blender, FreeCAD, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, and many other engineering tools can create or export it. You encounter STL files when downloading printable parts, exchanging basic CAD geometry, or preparing a mesh for slicing.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a 2D raster image format intended for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and common color modes, usually producing smaller files than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality.

A WEBP file contains pixels rather than vertices, surfaces, or editable 3D data. Use it for a rendered preview, thumbnail, product image, or documentation graphic; keep the original STL when the recipient needs to rotate, measure, edit, or print the model.

How to actually convert STL to WEBP

Render with Blender

1. Open Blender and choose File → Import → STL. Select the STL file and confirm the import.
2. Select the mesh and use Object → Set Origin → Origin to Geometry if the model's origin is inconvenient. Use the transform controls to orient the object for the desired view.
3. Add or position a camera and frame the model. A practical setup uses a three-quarter camera angle, a neutral background, and an area light or studio-style lighting.
4. Set the render size under Output Properties → Format. For a web preview, 1200 × 1200 pixels is a suitable starting point; choose a wider or taller canvas when the model requires it.
5. For a transparent background, enable Render Properties → Film → Transparent. This produces an alpha channel, provided the selected output format supports it.
6. Set Output Properties → Output → File Format to WebP if your Blender version exposes WebP output. Choose lossless compression for diagrams or flat-color renders, or lossy quality around 80–90 for smaller photographic previews.
7. Render with Render → Render Image, then save through Image → Save As. Use a filename such as model-preview.webp.

Render first, then convert with ImageMagick

If Blender does not offer WebP output, render to PNG to preserve transparency and detail, then convert it with ImageMagick:

Quality and limitations

STL has no canonical camera or appearance, so different converters can produce different images from the same file. A model that imports at the wrong scale, faces away from the camera, or contains flipped normals may render incorrectly; inspect the mesh and adjust orientation, normals, and framing before export.

WEBP resolution determines visible detail. Increasing compression cannot recover geometry lost during rendering, and a WEBP cannot be converted back into the original STL with accurate topology. Use PNG instead when exact lossless pixels, broad legacy compatibility, or dependable editing in older software is required.
