IGES files contain editable CAD geometry, but browsers, documentation systems, and product pages usually need a rendered image instead. Converting IGES to WEBP produces a compact 2D preview that is easier to share and embed, but it does not preserve the original 3D model.

What the IGES format is

IGES, usually stored with the .igs or .iges extension, is a neutral CAD exchange format defined by the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification. It stores geometric entities such as wireframes, curves, surfaces, and sometimes solid-related data; it is not a conventional image format.

Mechanical and industrial CAD applications including CATIA, SolidWorks, Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor, and older versions of many engineering systems can create or import IGES files. You commonly encounter IGES when exchanging parts between different CAD systems, opening legacy engineering data, or receiving a supplier model without the original application’s native format.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format intended for web and general digital-media use. It can store lossy or lossless images, supports transparency, and commonly produces smaller files than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality.

A WEBP conversion renders the IGES geometry from a selected viewpoint into pixels. The result can be used for browser previews, thumbnails, technical-document illustrations, email attachments, and catalog images. It cannot be reopened as editable curves, surfaces, or solids in a CAD program.

How to convert IGES to WEBP

Using the online converter

  1. Open the IGES-to-WEBP converter on 101convert.com; it can be used without installing desktop software.
  2. Upload the .igs or .iges file.
  3. Select WEBP as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the generated image and check that the model orientation, scale, edges, and visible surfaces are correct.

The converter must interpret the IGES entities and render them before encoding the result as WEBP. If the source contains multiple parts or construction geometry, inspect the preview because visibility settings in the source file may not transfer consistently.

Using FreeCAD and ImageMagick

  1. Open the file in FreeCAD with File → Open. Confirm that the required surfaces or solids appear in the model tree and adjust the view, background, and display mode.
  2. Set the camera to the required angle, fit the model to the window, and use View → Save image... to export a sufficiently large PNG.
  3. Convert the PNG to WEBP with ImageMagick:

magick model.png -quality 85 model.webp

Use a higher -quality value for fine edges or small text. For lossless output, use magick model.png -define webp:lossless=true model.webp.

Quality and compatibility limits

IGES does not normally contain the complete presentation information needed for a faithful product image, such as camera position, materials, lighting, textures, or a standardized background. A converter therefore chooses default rendering settings, and the result may differ from the view in the originating CAD application.

WEBP is resolution-dependent: enlarging a small output exposes jagged curves and thin edges. Choose the final pixel dimensions before conversion, and use lossless WEBP or PNG when the image contains dimension lines, dense wireframes, or small annotations. Preserve the original IGES file separately when future CAD editing is required.
