What the BREP format is
BREP means boundary representation: a solid or surface model described by vertices, edges, faces, topology, and geometric surfaces. It is used in CAD and solid-modeling workflows where exact shape information must remain editable and measurable.
BREP files commonly use .brep or .brp extensions. Open CASCADE Technology provides the BREP data structures and file format used by applications such as FreeCAD and other engineering programs built on the Open CASCADE geometry kernel. You may encounter BREP files after exporting a part from a CAD application or when exchanging geometry between Open CASCADE-based tools.
What the WEBP format is
WEBP is a raster image format for static views and animations. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and RGB or RGBA color, making it suitable for web pages, thumbnails, product previews, and technical-documentation images.
WEBP cannot preserve BREP topology, parametric dimensions, curves, solids, assemblies, or editable CAD history. Its advantage in this conversion is a smaller browser-ready image than many PNG or JPEG exports at comparable visual quality.
How to actually convert BREP to WEBP
Using FreeCAD and an image encoder
- Install FreeCAD and open the BREP with File → Open. If the file does not load, confirm that it contains valid Open CASCADE BREP data and that the extension is correct.
- Switch to the Part workbench, select the model in the tree, and use View → Standard views or the navigation controls to choose the required orientation. Use View → Fit all to center the part.
- Set the display mode, background, and visible objects. Hide construction geometry and other objects that should not appear in the image.
- Export the viewport with View → Save image. Choose a sufficiently large PNG, such as 1600 × 1200 pixels or larger when the image contains fine edges.
- Encode the exported image as WEBP with Google’s WebP tools:
cwebp -q 85 model-view.png -o model-view.webp
Alternatively, ImageMagick can perform the conversion:
magick model-view.png -strip -quality 85 model-view.webp
Use cwebp -lossless model-view.png -o model-view.webp or magick model-view.png -strip -define webp:lossless=true model-view.webp when preserving every rendered pixel matters more than file size.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the BREP, select WEBP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the rendered image. Check the resulting view and dimensions before using it in production, because an online converter may choose its own camera, background, resolution, and rendering settings.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The result depends on the camera angle, tessellation quality, lighting, background, and viewport resolution selected before export. A single WEBP normally represents only one view; create separate images for front, side, isometric, or section views.
Lossy WEBP quality around 80–90 usually preserves clean CAD edges while reducing size. Thin lines and high-contrast edges can show ringing or blur at lower quality, so use lossless WEBP when the image is intended for dimensioned drawings or close inspection.
BREP colors, materials, transparency, and assembly structure may not survive if the reader or renderer does not support them. The WEBP output has no real-world scale and cannot be reopened as a solid in a CAD system; retain the original BREP for editing, measurement, and archival use.
