BREP files contain editable 3D boundary geometry, but many documents, presentations, browsers, and image-based workflows accept only a rendered image. Converting the model to PNG creates a shareable raster view while leaving the original CAD geometry unchanged.

What the BREP format is

BREP means boundary representation: the file describes a solid or surface through its faces, edges, vertices, topology, and geometric definitions. It is used by CAD and 3D modeling software for precise mechanical parts, surfaces, and solid models.

The format is commonly associated with Open CASCADE Technology and may use the .brep or .brp extension. FreeCAD, Open CASCADE-based applications, and CAD data translators can create or open BREP files. You usually encounter one when exchanging a single CAD body without the complete project structure of a native parametric format.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format that stores pixels rather than editable CAD surfaces or solids. It supports lossless compression, full-color output, and transparency, making it suitable for documentation, web pages, previews, technical presentations, and screenshots of 3D models.

A PNG export represents the BREP from one camera position. It does not retain dimensions, topology, feature history, object measurements, or the ability to rotate and edit the model.

How to actually convert BREP to PNG

Convert online with 101convert

  1. Open the BREP-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com; no software installation is required.
  2. Upload the .brep or .brp file.
  3. Select PNG as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the generated image when processing finishes.

The result is a rendered view, not a direct transfer of CAD entities. If the service exposes view, resolution, or background settings, choose them before conversion; those settings determine what appears in the PNG.

Export from FreeCAD

  1. Install and open FreeCAD, then choose File → Open and select the BREP file.
  2. Switch to the Part workbench if necessary and select the imported object in the model tree.
  3. Use the standard view controls to choose an orientation, then use View → Fit all to center the model in the viewport.
  4. Set the required display mode, colors, and background in the view or display preferences.
  5. Choose View → Save image, select PNG, specify the pixel dimensions and filename such as part.png, and save.

FreeCAD is preferable when the camera angle, visible edges, shading, and image dimensions need manual control. If the BREP contains multiple objects, hide unwanted objects before saving the image.

Quality and limitations

PNG resolution is determined by the output pixel dimensions, not by the geometric precision of the BREP. Increase the width and height for printed documentation or fine edges; enlarging a small PNG afterward cannot restore lost detail.

Thin edges, small holes, and curved surfaces can disappear at low resolution or with shaded display modes. An orthographic view generally communicates dimensions more consistently than perspective, while perspective can better resemble a visual preview. Use a transparent background only when the destination application supports PNG alpha transparency.

Keep the original BREP for editing and downstream CAD exchange. A PNG cannot be converted back into an accurate solid model because it contains only a two-dimensional view and no reliable 3D topology.
