SketchUp creates SKB files as backup copies of 3D models, while PNG is widely accepted for previews, documentation, presentations, and image editing. Converting the backup requires opening or restoring the model and exporting a rendered 2D view, because PNG cannot store SketchUp geometry.

What the SKB format is

SKB is SketchUp’s backup format for 3D modeling projects. SketchUp creates an SKB file alongside an .skp model when backup or automatic recovery is enabled; it normally contains an earlier saved state of the model, including geometry, materials, scenes, and model settings.

SKB is not an image format and usually is not intended to be edited directly. If the original SKP file is damaged or missing, make a copy of the SKB file and rename the copy from model.skb to model.skp. Open the renamed copy in SketchUp. Keep the original SKB unchanged in case the backup is needed again.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster image format used for screenshots, technical illustrations, web images, and model previews. It supports sharp edges, transparency, and 24-bit or 32-bit color without the compression artifacts commonly produced by JPEG.

A PNG exported from SketchUp contains one selected camera view, not the editable 3D model. Use PNG when the recipient needs a conventional image or when the model must be inserted into a document, slide, website, or image editor.

How to actually convert SKB to PNG

With SketchUp Desktop

  1. Copy the SKB file before making changes.
  2. Rename the copy from project.skb to project.skp. Confirm the extension change if the operating system asks.
  3. Open the renamed file in SketchUp. If SketchUp reports that the file is damaged or incompatible, try opening it with the SketchUp version that created the backup, or use a newer version that supports that model format.
  4. Set the required camera angle, projection, scene, materials, shadows, and display style.
  5. Select File → Export → 2D Graphic.
  6. Choose PNG as the file type, specify the output filename, and open Options if available.
  7. Set the image width and height, enable antialiasing for smoother edges, and select a transparent background only when the image needs to be composited over another background.
  8. Click Export.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the SKB file, select PNG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. If the service does not identify the backup, first make a copy, rename its extension to .skp, and submit that copy.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The exported PNG reflects only the active view and SketchUp display settings. Hidden geometry, alternate scenes, layers or tags, animation, measurements, and editable materials are not preserved as separate data. Export each required scene or camera angle separately.

Increasing the export dimensions produces a sharper image but does not add geometric detail; extremely large exports can require substantial memory. Transparent PNG output may not reproduce every shadow, background, or visual effect consistently, so verify the result against the SketchUp viewport.

An SKB file may contain an older version of the model than the current SKP file. Check the model date and contents before exporting, especially when recovering unsaved work.
