Free online IGS to PNG converter

A report, web page, catalog, or presentation may need a viewable image instead of an editable CAD model. Converting an IGS file to PNG creates a shareable raster preview that recipients can open without CAD software, but it does not preserve 3D geometry.

What the IGS format is

IGS, usually stored with the .igs or .iges extension, is the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES) format for transferring CAD data between engineering applications. It can contain wireframes, curves, surfaces, solid boundary representations, annotations, and limited display attributes.

Mechanical CAD and engineering software such as CATIA, Siemens NX, SOLIDWORKS, Autodesk Inventor, and AutoCAD can create or import IGES files. IGS commonly appears in supplier data, legacy engineering projects, and exchanges between CAD systems that use different native formats.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster image format that stores pixels rather than curves, surfaces, dimensions, feature history, or 3D coordinates. It supports full-color images, sharp line work, and optional transparency without JPEG compression artifacts.

PNG is suitable for rendered model views in technical documentation, presentations, web pages, catalogs, and archived previews. The result cannot be rotated, measured, edited, or used for manufacturing as an original CAD model can.

How to convert IGS to PNG

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the IGS-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .igs or .iges file.
3. Start the conversion and download the generated .png file when processing finishes.

This method requires no installed software and is suitable when the file is not confidential and the converter's available viewpoint, background, and resolution are sufficient.

Using FreeCAD

1. Install FreeCAD and open the IGS file with File → Open. FreeCAD uses its CAD geometry kernel to import supported IGES entities.
2. Set a useful view with View → Standard views → Axonometric, then frame the model with View → Fit all.
3. Hide construction geometry or unwanted bodies in the model tree, and set the display mode, orientation, background, and visibility required in the image.
4. Choose View → Save image, select PNG, set the output dimensions, and save the result as model.png.

FreeCAD saves a rendered viewport image, not the IGS data itself. Use a larger pixel width and height when the PNG will be printed, cropped, or used to show small holes and fine edges.

Quality and compatibility limits

• IGES imports can contain open surfaces, duplicate entities, missing trims, or incomplete display attributes. If the model looks damaged, repair it or re-export it from a CAD application before rendering.
• Conversion to PNG removes editable geometry, units, layers, assembly relationships, dimensions as CAD data, and 3D viewpoint information.
• Colors and line styles can change because CAD programs interpret IGES display information differently. Check the rendered PNG instead of assuming it will match the source application.
• PNG compression is lossless, but it cannot add detail that was absent from the rendered image. Set the required output dimensions before export rather than enlarging a small PNG afterward.
• Transparent backgrounds depend on the converter or desktop application's export support. If transparency is unavailable, use a white or contrasting solid background so model edges remain visible.
• Do not upload confidential supplier or production data to a server-based converter. Use FreeCAD or another trusted desktop CAD viewer when the source file must remain local.
