What the 3DM format is

3DM is the native file format of McNeel Rhinoceros (Rhino), based on the openNURBS geometry system. It can store NURBS curves, surfaces, solids, meshes, annotations, layers, materials, lights, and view settings. Rhino users and professionals in architecture, industrial design, jewelry design, product development, and CAD exchange commonly use it. Other compatible CAD and 3D applications may import or export .3dm files, but support for advanced objects and plug-ins varies.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster image format that uses lossless compression for the exported pixels. It supports full-color images and an alpha channel for transparency, making it suitable for documentation, presentations, web pages, screenshots, and image editors. PNG contains only a flat image: it does not preserve 3D geometry, layers, measurements, materials as editable data, or the ability to rotate the model.

How to convert 3DM to PNG in Rhino

1. Open the .3dm file in Rhino.
2. Activate the viewport to capture. Choose Shaded for a quick technical view, Rendered for materials and lighting, or Raytraced for a higher-quality rendered view.
3. Frame the model with Zoom → Extents, or set the required camera angle, projection, and perspective manually.
4. Run Rhino’s ViewCaptureToFile command. Depending on the Rhino version, the same function is available through View → Viewport Capture → To File.
5. Select PNG as the output format, set the pixel width and height, and choose the active viewport or view.
6. Enable a transparent background if required and save the resulting .png file.

Set the output dimensions higher than the intended display size when the image will be printed or placed in a large document. Antialiasing, when available, reduces jagged edges. Use Shaded mode when edge clarity and speed matter; use Rendered or Raytraced mode when the image needs materials, shadows, or lighting.

Transparent output depends on the capture method, Rhino display mode, and renderer; some rendered effects may require an opaque background. Missing textures, unsupported plug-in objects, or application-specific materials can display differently or be omitted. Because PNG is raster rather than vector, enlarging it beyond its export dimensions can reveal pixelation.
