GLB is required by many web viewers, game engines, AR tools, and real-time 3D applications that cannot open Rhino’s native 3DM format. Converting the model makes it easier to distribute as one compact file containing geometry, materials, textures, and scene data.

What the 3DM format is

3DM is the native file format of Rhinoceros, commonly called Rhino, a CAD and 3D modeling application developed by McNeel. It stores NURBS curves and surfaces, polygon meshes, solids, layers, object attributes, blocks, lights, cameras, and material assignments.

Rhino creates 3DM files for industrial design, architecture, jewelry, product development, engineering, and fabrication. You may receive one when a designer sends a Rhino model, when a CAD supplier provides editable source geometry, or when a project is archived in its native format.

Unlike a mesh-only exchange format, 3DM can preserve mathematically precise curved surfaces. That precision is useful for editing and manufacturing but must be converted into polygon faces before the model can be saved as GLB.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary version of glTF, a real-time 3D format maintained by the Khronos Group. It stores a scene, mesh geometry, materials, cameras, animations, and usually embedded textures in a single file.

GLB is supported by web-based 3D viewers, game engines, augmented-reality pipelines, digital-twin platforms, and many modeling applications. Its single-file structure is easier to upload and share than a glTF file accompanied by separate binary geometry and image files.

GLB contains polygon meshes rather than Rhino’s native NURBS surfaces. The conversion therefore produces a display and real-time rendering asset, not a fully editable replacement for the original CAD model.

How to convert 3DM to GLB

Using Rhino

  1. Open the .3dm file in Rhino. Hide construction geometry, annotations, reference objects, and any layers that should not appear in the exported scene.
  2. Select the objects to export, or leave everything selected if the complete model is required.
  3. Choose File → Export Selected or File → Export.
  4. Set the output type to glTF Binary (*.glb), choose a filename such as model.glb, and confirm the export.
  5. In the export options, adjust mesh density and texture or material settings. Use a finer mesh for small curved parts and close-up rendering; use a coarser mesh for web delivery or large assemblies.
  6. Open the resulting GLB in a compatible viewer and inspect curved surfaces, object placement, materials, textures, and file size.

Rhino versions with glTF export can write GLB directly. If the installed Rhino version offers only a separate glTF file and binary or image resources, use a current Rhino release or another conversion workflow that explicitly supports binary GLB output; renaming a .gltf file to .glb does not convert it.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the 3DM file, select GLB as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file. Use a desktop workflow instead for confidential CAD data, very large assemblies, or projects requiring control over tessellation and material export.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Tessellation controls the result. A coarse mesh can show faceted cylinders, gaps, or visibly angular fillets; an excessively fine mesh increases polygon count, memory use, and loading time. Export a test section first when the model contains detailed curvature, embossed lettering, or small mechanical features.

GLB cannot preserve every 3DM feature. NURBS editability, Rhino history, construction planes, dimensions, annotations, procedural objects, and some Rhino-specific materials may be discarded or converted into static meshes. Grasshopper definitions and manufacturing metadata do not become part of an ordinary GLB scene.

Material appearance can change because Rhino and glTF use different shading models. Check metallic and roughness values, transparency, normal maps, texture paths, and scene scale after export. Embedded textures generally make GLB easier to move between applications, while external texture references can break when files are copied separately.

For downstream CAD editing, retain the original .3dm file and treat .glb as a presentation, visualization, web, or real-time asset. For the smallest usable output, remove hidden objects and unnecessary layers before exporting, then validate the file in the target application rather than relying only on its file extension.
