What the PLY format is
PLY, originally the Polygon File Format developed at Stanford, stores 3D data as vertices and optional faces. It is common in 3D scanning, photogrammetry, LiDAR, point-cloud processing, reconstruction, and mesh-cleaning workflows.
A PLY file may be ASCII text or binary. Its header declares elements and properties, commonly vertex coordinates (x, y, z), normals, RGB or RGBA vertex colors, face indices, and scanner-specific attributes such as confidence or classification values.
PLY can contain a polygon mesh or only an unordered point cloud. It has no single standardized material or texture-image workflow; UV coordinates and texture references may appear in particular implementations, but they are not as consistently supported as geometry and vertex colors.
What the GLB format is
GLB is the binary container form of glTF 2.0. A typical .glb combines glTF scene data, geometry buffers, materials, and texture images into one file, unlike a .gltf asset that often references separate binary and image files.
GLB is intended for efficient runtime delivery of 3D scenes. It is widely used by browser viewers and glTF-compatible applications; game engines may require their own glTF importer or plug-in. Standard triangle meshes, normals, UVs, texture images, and vertex colors have the broadest support.
Convert the file

Use Blender when the source needs inspection, repair, reduction, or material work:
- Open Blender and import the file with File → Import → Stanford (.ply).
- Check whether the import contains faces. In the viewport, confirm the scale, orientation, vertex colors, and missing or inverted surfaces.
- If a mesh has incorrect face direction, enter Edit Mode, select the geometry, then use Mesh → Normals → Recalculate Outside.
- Triangulate non-triangular faces when required by the destination pipeline, using Object → Convert → Mesh if needed and a Triangulate modifier or Mesh → Faces → Triangulate Faces in Edit Mode.
- Export with File → Export → glTF 2.0. Set Format to glTF Binary (.glb), choose a filename, and select Export glTF 2.0.
If vertex colors are needed, verify that Blender imported a color attribute and that the exported GLB displays it in the target viewer. If the model needs an image texture, create or verify UVs, connect the image to a material, and pack or include the image during GLB export.
Quality and compatibility limits
A conversion cannot create data absent from the source. A PLY containing only positions and faces becomes an untextured mesh unless normals, UVs, materials, or textures are added during processing.
Point-cloud PLY files need special handling. glTF defines a point primitive, but many viewers, engines, and converters primarily expect triangle meshes. If the receiving application requires a solid model, reconstruct a surface from the points in software such as MeshLab or CloudCompare, remove artifacts, and export the resulting mesh.
PLY permits arbitrary custom properties, but glTF defines a limited set of standard vertex attributes. Scanner metadata, confidence fields, classifications, and proprietary attributes are commonly discarded unless a conversion workflow explicitly preserves them through a supported glTF extension.
PLY does not impose a universal unit system. glTF commonly uses meters, so a scan authored in millimeters may appear 1,000 times too large or small. Verify dimensions after export, and reduce excessively dense meshes before conversion when file size or runtime performance matters; decimation reduces geometric detail.
GLB is a binary container, not automatic compression. Geometry compression and texture compression require compatible exporter settings and a viewer that supports the corresponding glTF extensions.
