What the 3MF format is

3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) is a ZIP-based container standardized by the 3MF Consortium for additive-manufacturing workflows. Its XML data can store mesh geometry, units, multiple objects, colors, materials, textures, build-plate placement, thumbnails, and manufacturing metadata in one package.

3MF files are commonly produced or used by slicers and CAD applications such as PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Cura, Microsoft 3D Builder, SolidWorks, and Autodesk Fusion. Unlike STL, 3MF can preserve several objects and appearance data, so it can represent a print project or manufacturing handoff rather than only an untextured triangle mesh.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary container form of glTF, a real-time 3D format used by browsers, WebGL viewers, game engines, AR applications, and 3D software. A GLB can contain the scene hierarchy, meshes, materials, textures, cameras, animations, and binary buffers in one file.

Compared with a text-based .gltf file, GLB is easier to distribute because it normally embeds the binary geometry and image resources instead of requiring separate .bin and texture files. Its materials use glTF’s physically based rendering model, which is widely supported but does not represent every specialized 3MF or CAD material definition.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• The conversion normally preserves visible mesh geometry, but it does not preserve slicer profiles, print settings, supports, printer assignments, or build-plate instructions.
• A 3MF package can contain multiple build items. A converter may merge them into one GLB scene, change their hierarchy, or export only the active item; inspect the scene after conversion.
• Confirm the scale by measuring a known feature. 3MF stores units, while STL and some importers may interpret dimensions differently.
• Converting through STL discards appearance and organizational data. Use direct conversion or OBJ when those properties matter.
• 3MF print-color assignments, specialized materials, and unsupported shader properties may be approximated or discarded because GLB uses glTF materials.
• Embedded textures make a GLB self-contained but increase its size. Reduce texture resolution or mesh density only after checking the visual detail required by the target application.
