How to convert 3mf to 3ds file

A legacy 3D application, game tool, or asset archive may require Autodesk 3DS instead of the newer 3MF format. The conversion is usually a mesh export, so print settings, build-plate data, assemblies, and advanced appearance information may not survive.

What the 3MF format is

3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) is a ZIP-based container standardized by the 3MF Consortium for additive-manufacturing workflows. Its package contains XML parts that can describe one or more meshes, units, object placement, colors, materials, textures, build platforms, print settings, and other manufacturing metadata.

3MF is used by 3D-printing software, CAD applications, slicers, printer manufacturers, and model repositories. Applications such as Microsoft 3D Builder, Autodesk Fusion, PrusaSlicer, and Ultimaker Cura can create or export 3MF files. A 3MF file may represent a single printable object, multiple parts, or a complete slicer project.

What the 3DS format is

3DS is a legacy binary scene format from Autodesk 3D Studio and 3ds Max. It can store polygon meshes, object names, basic material definitions, texture references, cameras, lights, and scene information.

Its primary advantage is compatibility with older modeling, visualization, game-development, and asset-management software. Its limitations include an outdated material model, unreliable unit communication, limited support for modern physically based materials, and a common maximum of 65,536 vertices per mesh object because face indices are 16-bit. Large objects may therefore require decimation or splitting before export.

Convert 3MF to 3DS online

  1. Open the 3MF converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .3mf file and select 3DS as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .3ds file.
  4. Open the file in the target application and check scale, object placement, normals, materials, and textures.

This option requires no installed software and is available free of charge. Do not upload confidential or commercially sensitive models unless the service's data-handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Convert with desktop software

Use a 3MF-capable CAD or slicer application to export an intermediate format, then use a 3D editor that can write 3DS. OBJ is generally preferable to STL when the source contains separate objects, material assignments, vertex colors, or texture references; STL preserves only triangular geometry and usually loses appearance data.

  1. Open the .3mf file in a 3MF-capable application such as 3D Builder, Autodesk Fusion, PrusaSlicer, or Ultimaker Cura.
  2. Export the model as .obj when object separation or appearance matters. Use .stl only when geometry is all that is needed.
  3. Import the intermediate file into Autodesk 3ds Max or another desktop program that supports both the intermediate format and 3DS.
  4. Check the imported scale and orientation, repair or simplify the mesh if necessary, then use File → Export → Export Selected in 3ds Max and choose 3D Studio (*.3DS).
  5. Reopen the exported file in the destination application to verify every object, material reference, texture path, and dimension.

Menu names vary between software versions. A direct 3MF import or 3DS export should not be assumed for every application; confirm both capabilities before choosing a desktop workflow.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • The conversion normally transfers polygon geometry, not 3MF print profiles, supports, build sequences, slicer settings, printer settings, or other manufacturing metadata.
  • A 3MF package may contain multiple parts and assemblies. Depending on the converter, they may remain separate, become one mesh, lose their original names, or be placed incorrectly. Inspect the object hierarchy and relative positions.
  • 3MF commonly records dimensions in millimeters and communicates units explicitly. 3DS has no dependable modern unit system, so measure the result and apply the required scale during import or export.
  • Per-face colors, PBR materials, texture packages, and other 3MF extensions may be flattened, converted to basic materials, or discarded. Rebuild materials and relink textures in the destination software when visual fidelity matters.
  • Very dense meshes can exceed the per-object limits of common 3DS implementations. Decimate the mesh or divide it into multiple objects before exporting.
  • Check normals and winding after conversion. A change in coordinate conventions or face orientation can produce invisible or incorrectly shaded surfaces.
  • For a model intended only for 3D printing, STL or OBJ is often a more suitable interchange format than 3DS. Use 3DS when the receiving application specifically requires the legacy scene format.
