Free online SCAD to 3DS converter

SCAD files contain OpenSCAD source code, while many 3D editors and older visualization tools require a mesh such as 3DS. Converting requires rendering the parametric SCAD model first, then exporting that mesh through software that supports the legacy 3DS format.

What the SCAD format is

SCAD is the native source format of OpenSCAD, a script-based CAD application for models defined with primitives, modules, transformations, Boolean operations, and variables. SCAD files are plain-text programs rather than finished polygon meshes, so a viewer or mesh editor cannot normally use them until OpenSCAD evaluates the code.

OpenSCAD creates SCAD files; users commonly encounter them in 3D-printing projects, configurable product designs, mechanical parts, and source-controlled CAD repositories. A model may also depend on external files included with include or use, so keep those files in their expected relative paths before rendering.

What the 3DS format is

3DS is the legacy 3D Studio mesh format. It stores polygon geometry, object names, basic materials, texture references, cameras, and lights, and is still accepted by some older 3D applications, asset libraries, and visualization workflows.

Its main practical advantage is compatibility with software that does not read SCAD or OpenSCAD meshes. It is not parametric: variables, modules, source code, construction history, and editable Boolean relationships are discarded during conversion. The format also has relatively restrictive legacy limits, including 16-bit mesh indexing, so dense models may need to be split into multiple objects.

How to convert SCAD to 3DS

Desktop method using OpenSCAD and Blender

1. Install OpenSCAD and open the .scad file. Resolve missing includes and confirm that the model renders correctly.
2. Set the required curve and circle resolution in the source, commonly with $fn, $fa, or $fs. Higher resolution produces a smoother mesh but increases polygon count.
3. Use Design → Render (CGAL) or press F6. Preview mode may contain display-only geometry that is unsuitable for export.
4. Use File → Export → Export as STL and save the result as model.stl. The command-line equivalent is openscad -o model.stl model.scad.
5. Open Blender and enable the bundled 3DS importer/exporter if necessary under Edit → Preferences → Add-ons or the current Extensions panel.
6. Import the intermediate mesh with File → Import → STL. Select the object and apply its transform with Object → Apply → Rotation & Scale if accurate scale and clean export are required.
7. Export with File → Export → 3D Studio (.3ds). Enable selection-only export when the scene contains unrelated objects, and choose the appropriate forward/up axis for the destination application.

For command-line rendering, OpenSCAD can produce the intermediate mesh without opening its interface: openscad -o model.stl model.scad. Blender then performs the format conversion because OpenSCAD does not natively write 3DS.

Online method

For a no-install conversion, use the SCAD converter on 101convert.com, upload the file, choose 3DS as the output when available, and download the generated file. External include files, unsupported SCAD code, large models, or private designs may make the desktop workflow more suitable.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The STL intermediate normally contains geometry but no reliable color, material, camera, or lighting information. If the SCAD design uses multiple colored parts, export each part separately or recreate materials in Blender before writing the 3DS file.

OpenSCAD’s coordinate units are generally treated as millimeters, while 3DS has no dependable universal unit interpretation. Verify dimensions after import and adjust the Blender scene scale before export when the receiving application expects centimeters, inches, or another unit.

Use a moderate $fn value first, inspect the resulting polygon count, and increase it only where curved surfaces show visible faceting. Very dense meshes can exceed 3DS limits or become slow and unreliable in older software; Blender may need to split large objects during export.
