How to convert glb to 3ds file

Some legacy 3D Studio tools, older game engines, and archival projects require .3ds instead of GLB. Conversion is also needed when a recipient expects a mesh file with separate bitmap textures rather than a single glTF package.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary form of glTF, a Khronos Group format designed for efficient real-time 3D delivery. A .glb file can contain meshes, node hierarchies, transforms, UV coordinates, PBR materials, images, cameras, and animation data in one package.

Blender, game engines, web applications, product configurators, augmented-reality systems, and many asset-export tools use GLB. Its embedded resources make it convenient for browser delivery and for transferring a complete modern asset as one file.

What the 3DS format is

3DS is a chunk-based binary scene format created for Autodesk 3D Studio and later associated with 3D Studio Max. It can store polygon meshes, object transforms, UV coordinates, basic materials, bitmap texture references, lights, cameras, and some legacy animation data.

Its main advantage is compatibility with older modeling, visualization, CAD, and game-development software. It is not a modern replacement for GLB: the format has restrictive legacy limits and cannot represent the full glTF material, animation, and scene model.

Use 3DS when the receiving application specifically requires .3ds or when an older project or pipeline depends on that format.

How to convert GLB to 3DS

Blender is the most practical desktop option because it imports GLB directly and can export 3DS when its 3D Studio extension is installed.

  1. Install a current Blender release and open it.
  2. Choose File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf) and select the source .glb file.
  3. Inspect the scene in the viewport. Delete cameras, lights, helpers, or other objects that the destination does not need.
  4. Correct the model's scale and orientation. If transforms must be baked into the mesh, select the relevant objects and use Object → Apply → Rotation & Scale. Check the unit interpretation used by the target application.
  5. Choose File → Export → 3D Studio (.3ds). If this format is absent, install or enable Blender's official 3D Studio import/export extension through the Preferences or Extensions interface; the exact location depends on the Blender version.
  6. In the export options, enable selection-only export when appropriate and set the coordinate orientation and scale expected by the target software. Export to a short, simple folder path.
  7. Save the result as model.3ds. Keep every referenced image file with it, then open the exported file in the target application or another 3D viewer to check geometry, scale, normals, UVs, and materials.

3DS normally references textures as separate image files, so a GLB's embedded images may need to be unpacked or saved to disk before export. If Blender or the destination cannot resolve the paths, repair the texture references and place the images in the folder expected by the 3DS file.

For a conversion without installing software, 101convert.com can convert the file online for free: upload the GLB, select 3DS, run the conversion, and download the resulting .3ds file. Do not upload confidential assets unless online processing is permitted by your file-handling policy.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Materials may be simplified. 3DS does not provide an equivalent to glTF's complete PBR model. Metallic, roughness, normal, occlusion, emissive, transparency, and alpha settings may be reduced to basic material properties.
  • Modern animation usually does not survive. Skinning, skeletal animation, morph targets, and glTF-specific scene behavior generally require a different target format or separate export workflow. Basic legacy keyframes may be supported by some 3DS readers, but compatibility is not consistent.
  • Textures become external dependencies. Copy all referenced images with the converted file and verify their paths; the 3DS file is not normally a self-contained replacement for GLB.
  • Large meshes may need preparation. Classic 3DS readers commonly impose 16-bit vertex and face-index limits per mesh, so high-resolution objects may need to be split. Long object and material names can also be truncated.
  • Geometry can change. Export may triangulate faces, merge vertices, alter smoothing groups, or recalculate normals. Compare the result in the destination software rather than relying only on the exported file's size.
