GLB files are commonly delivered by web viewers, game engines, CAD viewers, and 3D asset libraries, while Rhino requires 3DM for native project storage. Converting the file lets you open the asset in Rhino, preserve it in a Rhino document, and continue mesh-based editing or organization.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary container form of glTF 2.0. It can store polygon geometry, materials, textures, cameras, lights, and animation in one file, which makes it common for browser-based 3D viewers, product configurators, AR applications, game engines, Blender exports, and asset libraries.

GLB describes polygon meshes rather than Rhino’s native NURBS surfaces. A model exported from Blender, a game engine, CAD visualization software, or a web-based 3D tool may therefore arrive as a triangulated or quad-based mesh with physically based material data.

What the 3DM format is

3DM is the native document format of McNeel Rhino. It can contain NURBS curves and surfaces, SubD objects, polygon meshes, materials, layers, blocks, annotations, lights, and scene settings.

3DM is suited to Rhino editing, Grasshopper workflows, architectural and product-design exchange, and archiving a Rhino scene with its layer structure. A GLB imported into 3DM normally remains a polygon mesh; changing the extension does not convert it into editable NURBS geometry.

How to convert GLB to 3DM

Direct conversion in Rhino 8

  1. Open Rhino 8 and choose File → Import.
  2. Select the .glb file. If Rhino presents glTF import options, set the desired unit scale and material or texture handling.
  3. Check the imported mesh for missing textures, incorrect scale, flipped faces, and unwanted scene objects.
  4. Save the document with File → Save As, choose Rhino 3D Model, and use a .3dm filename.

For a no-install conversion, upload the GLB file to 101convert.com, select 3DM as the output format, run the conversion, and download the resulting file.

Fallback workflow for Rhino versions without GLB import

  1. In Blender, choose File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf) and open the GLB.
  2. Inspect the scene, remove cameras and lights if they are not needed, and apply any required transforms.
  3. Choose File → Export → Wavefront (.obj). Keep the exported .obj, .mtl, and texture files together.
  4. In Rhino, choose File → Import, select the OBJ file, review the mesh import settings, and then use File → Save As to create the .3dm file.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • Geometry: the result is usually a mesh, not a parametric or NURBS model. Use Rhino tools such as MeshToNurb only when a surface representation is required; converting a dense mesh can create a very large, difficult-to-edit document.
  • Materials: GLB PBR materials may not map exactly to Rhino materials. Embedded textures can be lost or require reassignment, especially when using the OBJ fallback.
  • Animation: Rhino 3DM is not an equivalent animation container, so GLB skeletal animation and timeline data generally do not survive the conversion.
  • Scale: GLB files often have ambiguous or exporter-dependent units. Verify a known dimension in Rhino and use Scale before saving if necessary.
  • Scene structure: cameras, lights, animations, and glTF-specific metadata may be omitted; mesh geometry and basic visual properties are the parts most likely to transfer.
