GLB files contain 3D scenes, while BMP files contain flat raster images. This conversion is needed when a graphics editor, documentation system, print workflow, or image-only device cannot open a 3D model and requires a rendered view instead.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary form of glTF, a 3D format that can package meshes, materials, textures, cameras, lights, and animations in one file. It is commonly exported by Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Maya, SketchUp, and CAD or product-visualization tools, and is widely used by WebGL viewers, game engines, augmented-reality applications, and online product displays.

A GLB is a scene rather than a single image. Its appearance depends on the active camera, lighting, material support, animation frame, and renderer, so converting it to BMP means rendering the scene from a chosen viewpoint.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that stores pixels directly, commonly as 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA data. It is supported by Windows graphics software, image editors, technical documentation tools, and some legacy texture or visualization workflows.

BMP is useful when uncompressed pixel data, simple decoding, or broad desktop compatibility matters. It usually produces much larger files than PNG or JPEG and does not retain meshes, materials, cameras, animation, or other 3D information.

How to actually convert GLB to BMP

Using Blender

  1. Install Blender and open it.
  2. Choose File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf), then select the .glb file.
  3. Set the view that should appear in the image. Select the imported camera if the file contains one, or position the viewport and use View → Align View → Align Active Camera to View after creating or selecting a camera.
  4. Add lights if the imported scene is dark. An area light or an HDRI in the World settings can provide more predictable illumination than relying on viewport shading.
  5. In Output Properties, set the required resolution, such as 1920 × 1080, and choose a frame if the GLB contains animation.
  6. Under Output Properties → Output, set File Format to BMP. Use RGB for maximum compatibility; use RGBA only when the destination application supports 32-bit BMP transparency.
  7. Render with Render → Render Image.
  8. In the Image Editor, choose Image → Save As, select BMP, and save the rendered image.

For repeatable command-line rendering, a prepared Blender scene can be rendered with blender -b scene.blend -o //render_ -F BMP -f 1. This renders frame 1 in BMP format; the scene must already contain the imported GLB, camera, lighting, and output resolution.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the GLB, select BMP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. Online conversion is suitable for a quick default render, but desktop Blender gives control over camera position, lighting, resolution, animation frame, transparency, and rendering engine.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The output resolution determines image detail; increasing it improves detail but increases render time and BMP file size. BMP has no normal web-style compression, so a 4K 24-bit image can occupy roughly 24 MB before row alignment and metadata.

Materials may look different from the original viewer because GLB files can use physically based rendering, normal maps, occlusion maps, emissive maps, transparency, and extensions that are interpreted differently by Blender and other renderers. Check textures after import, especially if the GLB references external resources instead of embedding them.

A GLB animation produces one BMP per rendered frame, not an animated BMP. A transparent GLB background may also become a solid color or lose its alpha channel; choose RGB with a defined background when the destination software has unreliable 32-bit BMP support.
