A BLEND file contains a 3D scene, while BMP stores only a flat raster image. Convert it when a legacy editor, print workflow, or device accepts BMP but cannot open Blender project files.

What the BLEND format is

BLEND is Blender’s native project format. It can store meshes, materials, textures, cameras, lights, animation, compositing settings, and scene metadata in one file. Blender creates and opens BLEND files; the format is commonly encountered in 3D modeling, animation, game-asset production, and rendering workflows.

A BLEND file is not itself a conventional 2D image. To produce a BMP, Blender must render a selected frame from a camera or save a raster image generated in the Image Editor.

What the BMP format is

BMP, or Bitmap, is an uncompressed or lightly compressed raster-image format supported by Windows software, older graphics applications, print utilities, and embedded systems. It stores pixels rather than geometry, cameras, lighting, editable objects, or animation.

BMP is useful when broad legacy compatibility and predictable pixel data matter. Its lack of typical image compression makes files substantially larger than PNG or JPEG at the same dimensions.

How to convert BLEND to BMP

Using Blender

  1. Open the project in Blender with File → Open and select the .blend file.
  2. Choose the scene and camera that should produce the image. Check that the scene has usable lighting, materials, and visible objects.
  3. Set the output dimensions in Output Properties → Format. Choose the required resolution and frame, such as 1920 × 1080.
  4. Under Output Properties → Output, set the destination folder. Under File Format, choose BMP; select RGB when an ordinary opaque image is required.
  5. Render the current frame with Render → Render Image or press F12.
  6. In the render window, choose Image → Save As, select BMP if Blender asks for a format, enter a filename such as render.bmp, and save it.

For batch conversion of a known frame, Blender can render directly from a terminal:

blender -b scene.blend -o /output/render -F BMP -f 1

Here, -b runs without the full interface, -F BMP selects the BMP format, and -f 1 renders frame 1. Replace the input file, output path, and frame number as needed.

Using the built-in online converter

You can also upload the BLEND file to the converter on 101convert.com and download the resulting BMP without installing software. For scenes that depend on linked textures, fonts, simulations, add-ons, or a particular Blender version, opening the project in Blender gives more control over the rendered result.

Quality and compatibility considerations

The conversion produces a rendered view, not an editable export of the 3D model. Objects, animation, materials, camera data, and scene structure cannot be recovered from the BMP.

BLEND projects may reference image textures stored outside the project file. Use File → External Data → Pack Resources before transferring the project, or keep all referenced files available during rendering; missing textures can make the BMP appear blank, pink, or incorrectly shaded.

BMP normally has no useful transparency workflow. If the render needs an alpha channel, verify that the target application supports the selected BMP variant; PNG is usually a better choice for transparent renders. Increase the render resolution and use suitable sampling before export, because saving as BMP cannot restore detail lost during rendering.
