FreeCAD users may need a BMP image when a 3D model must be placed in documentation, opened by legacy graphics software, or submitted to a system that accepts raster images but not CAD documents. The conversion produces a rendered picture of the current model view; it does not turn the editable 3D geometry into BMP data.

What the FCSTD format is

FCStd is FreeCAD's native document format. It stores a model tree, parametric features, sketches, constraints, object properties, materials, visibility states, and sometimes saved camera or viewport information. FreeCAD creates FCStd files, and they commonly appear in mechanical design, parametric CAD, 3D printing, and engineering workflows.

An FCStd document can contain several bodies or parts, but it is not itself an image. A converter must open or render the document before producing a bitmap.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format supported by Windows software, technical documentation tools, older graphics applications, and many image-processing programs. It is straightforward to decode and can store uncompressed pixel data, but files are usually much larger than PNG or JPEG files at the same dimensions.

BMP is suitable when a receiving application specifically requires .bmp, when predictable pixel output matters, or when compatibility with older software is more important than file size. It stores the rendered view only: model history, editable surfaces, measurements, and camera controls are not preserved.

How to convert FCSTD to BMP

Using FreeCAD

  1. Install and open FreeCAD, then choose File → Open and load the .FCStd document.
  2. In the 3D view, select the objects that should appear and adjust visibility in the Model tree. Hide construction geometry, sketches, or auxiliary objects that should not be included.
  3. Set the desired orientation using the standard view controls or the navigation cube. Use View → Standard views for a fixed front, rear, top, or axonometric view, then use View → Fit all to frame the model.
  4. Set the display mode, background, and perspective under the View properties or display preferences. Increase the 3D view size if you need a larger output image.
  5. Choose View → Save image..., enter a filename such as model.bmp, select BMP if FreeCAD presents a format list, and save the image.

For repeatable output, open FreeCAD's Python console through View → Panels → Python console and save the active view with a defined size:

Gui.activeDocument().activeView().saveImage("model.bmp", 2000, 1500, "Current", 1)

The arguments specify the filename, width, height, display mode, and antialiasing setting. Run the command after opening the document and configuring the view. If a particular FreeCAD build does not expose BMP through its image writer, save as PNG first and use a desktop image editor that supports BMP export.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the FCStd file, choose BMP as the target format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. Check the preview or output dimensions afterward because an online renderer may use default camera, visibility, background, or resolution settings.

Quality and compatibility considerations

The result depends on the saved or default camera and on which FCStd objects are visible at conversion time. A conversion cannot recover hidden objects or create a technical drawing from model metadata; configure the view before exporting.

Choose the output dimensions explicitly when possible. A 2000 × 1500 pixel export provides more detail for documentation than a small viewport screenshot, while increasing dimensions also increases an uncompressed BMP's file size. Anti-aliasing reduces jagged edges on diagonal model lines but can slightly change pixel colors at object boundaries.

BMP color depth and transparency support vary between applications. Use an opaque background for maximum compatibility, and verify that the receiving program accepts the selected BMP variant. Keep the original .FCStd file because the BMP cannot be edited as a 3D model.
