JPEG is needed when a FreeCAD model must be shared as an image, inserted into documentation, or opened on a device without CAD software. Converting an FCStd document produces a 2D snapshot of the current 3D view, not an editable model.

What the FCStd format is

.FCStd is FreeCAD's native document format. It stores parametric 3D bodies, sketches, features, constraints, materials, visibility states, and document metadata created in FreeCAD. You encounter it when receiving a FreeCAD design or opening a model saved from the FreeCAD desktop application.

What the JPEG format is

.jpg and .jpeg are compressed raster-image formats. JPEG is suitable for previews, email attachments, web pages, reports, and general-purpose image viewers because it is widely supported and usually much smaller than an uncompressed image.

JPEG does not contain solid geometry, parametric history, measurements, camera data, or editable FreeCAD features. It also does not support transparent backgrounds; transparent areas are flattened against a chosen background color.

How to actually convert FCSTD to JPEG

Using FreeCAD

  1. Open the .FCStd file in FreeCAD.
  2. In the Model tree, make the required bodies and objects visible. Select a standard view such as View → Standard views → Axonometric, then use View → Fit all to frame the model.
  3. Set the display mode, background, and perspective or orthographic projection to match the intended image. Hide construction geometry and sketches if they should not appear.
  4. Open FreeCAD's Python console through View → Panels → Python console and run:
Gui.activeDocument().activeView().fitAll()
Gui.activeDocument().activeView().saveImage("model.jpg", 1600, 1200, "Current", 90)

This saves the current 3D viewport as model.jpg at 1600 × 1200 pixels. Replace the filename and dimensions as needed. The final argument controls JPEG compression in FreeCAD versions that support it; use a higher value for better quality and a larger file.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the FCStd file, choose JPEG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. The output depends on the converter's camera, visibility, background, and resolution handling, so use FreeCAD first when the exact viewpoint matters.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • JPEG conversion renders only the currently selected view. A model with hidden bodies, an unfitted camera, or an unwanted display mode can produce an incomplete image.
  • Increase the output dimensions before conversion when the image will be printed or placed in a large document. Enlarging a small JPEG afterward cannot restore missing detail.
  • JPEG uses lossy compression and can introduce artifacts around sharp edges, text, and thin lines. Use a high quality setting; use PNG instead when lossless edges or transparency are required.
  • The resulting image opens in standard viewers and editors, but recovering the original model requires the FCStd source file.
