What the USD format is
Universal Scene Description (USD) is a 3D scene format developed by Pixar for describing geometry, materials, cameras, lights, animation, and relationships between scene assets. Common files include .usd, .usda (text), .usdc (binary), and .usdz (packaged assets).
USD is created or exported by applications such as Pixar USD tools, Blender, Houdini, Maya, Cinema 4D, and many production or visualization pipelines. You encounter it when exchanging complete scenes, assemblies, animated assets, or augmented-reality models rather than single flat images.
What the JPEG format is
JPEG is a 2D raster image format commonly stored with the .jpg or .jpeg extension. It stores pixels, not meshes, materials, cameras, lights, animation, object hierarchy, or editable USD scene data.
JPEG suits web pages, email, presentations, documentation, thumbnails, and general-purpose image editing. Its lossy compression produces relatively small files, but it can introduce ringing and block artifacts around sharp edges, text, and fine model details.
How to convert USD to JPEG
The conversion is a render, not a direct data-preserving export: a USD viewer loads the scene, a renderer creates pixels from a camera view, and the result is saved as JPEG.
Using the 101convert online converter
- Open the USD-to-JPEG conversion page on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.usd,.usda,.usdc, or supported.usdzfile. - Choose JPEG as the output format and start the conversion.
- Download the resulting
.jpgfile after processing.
This option requires no installed 3D software. If the scene contains unsupported shaders, external textures, animation, or no usable camera, open it in a USD-capable desktop application and render it there instead.
Using Pixar USD tools
Install the Pixar USD command-line tools, then render a scene with usdrecord:
usdrecord --imageWidth 1920 scene.usd render.jpg
To select a camera, provide its USD prim path:
usdrecord --camera /World/Camera --imageWidth 1920 scene.usd render.jpg
The exact available options depend on the USD build and its Hydra rendering plugins. If JPEG output is unavailable in that build, render to a supported lossless format such as PNG and convert that image with an image editor or magick:
magick render.png -quality 90 render.jpg
Using Blender
- Open Blender and choose File → Import → Universal Scene Description (.usd/.usda/.usdc/.usdz).
- Adjust the imported camera, lights, materials, world background, and render engine as needed.
- Open Output Properties, set the resolution, and select Image → JPEG as the file format.
- Set JPEG quality, choose an output directory, and select Render → Render Image.
- Save the rendered result with Image → Save As.
For repeatable command-line rendering, configure the scene in Blender first, then run:
blender -b scene.blend -o //render -F JPEG -f 1
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
JPEG cannot represent transparency. Use PNG when the rendered model needs an alpha channel, a lossless master, or crisp linework. A white or other solid background must be rendered before saving to JPEG.
Choose the render resolution before conversion; enlarging a small JPEG afterward does not recover geometry detail. A quality setting around 90 is a practical starting point, while repeated JPEG resaving causes additional loss.
The output shows only the selected camera view and frame. Hidden objects, alternate cameras, animation, USD variants, instancing, material networks, external textures, and renderer-specific features may be missing or look different in another USD application. Keep the original USD files when the scene must remain editable or be rendered from another angle.
