Notes on quality, compatibility, or limitations

USD and Alembic are not equivalent formats: USD is a scene description system, while Alembic is a baked cache format. Because of that, the conversion is usually one-way in practice for animation and geometry data. You should expect some USD features to be lost, such as layering, references, variant sets, material networks, and other scene-graph behaviors that Alembic does not represent.

For best results, convert only the data that Alembic is designed to carry: animated geometry, transforms, and optionally cameras. If your USD file contains complex shading, instancing, or pipeline-specific metadata, verify the result in the target application after export. Also note that Alembic is generally best for baked animation; if you need editable scene structure, keeping the data in USD may be the better choice.
