2. Check the model scale and orientation. STL files often have no reliable unit metadata, so you may need to adjust size or rotate the object before export.
3. If needed, clean up the mesh first: remove duplicate vertices, fix normals, and apply transforms.
4. Export or cache the model as Alembic using the application’s export function. In Blender, use File → Export → Alembic (.abc). In Maya, use Cache → Alembic Cache → Export Selection to Alembic. In Houdini, use an Alembic ROP or export node.
5. Choose export options such as selected objects only, apply transforms, and write normals if available.
6. Save the file with the .abc extension.

Notes on quality and compatibility

STL to ABC conversion is generally straightforward because both formats can represent polygonal geometry, but there are important limitations. STL does not contain materials, textures, hierarchy, or animation, so those elements cannot be recovered during conversion. The resulting ABC file will usually contain only the mesh data unless you add animation manually.

Because STL files may use inconsistent units or have inverted normals, the converted Alembic file can appear too large, too small, or shaded incorrectly if the source mesh is not prepared carefully.
