How to perform the conversion

Converting STL to USD is usually a geometry-only transfer: the mesh from STL is imported and written into a USD scene. Because STL does not contain materials or scene structure, the resulting USD file will typically contain only the mesh unless you add more data afterward.

STL to USD conversion is not a full scene reconstruction. Since STL contains only triangle geometry, the converted USD file will usually not include colors, textures, materials, cameras, lights, or animation unless you add them separately.

Another important limitation is units: STL files often have ambiguous or missing unit information, so the model may appear too large or too small in USD-based software. Always verify scale after conversion.

Mesh quality is preserved only as well as the source STL allows. If the STL has low-resolution triangles, holes, or non-manifold geometry, those issues will carry into USD. For best results, start with a clean STL and inspect the imported model before exporting.

USD itself has multiple encodings, and compatibility can vary by application. .usda is human-readable, .usdc is binary and compact, and .usd is commonly used as a general extension. Choose the variant best supported by your target software.
