Convert stl to pdo

Convert STL to PDO

Convert STL meshes into Pepakura PDO papercraft projects.

Convert STL files online

We don’t have a dedicated online converter for STL to PDO yet, but you can convert STL files online to these and more formats:

How to convert stl to pdo file

.pdo files are Pepakura Designer papercraft projects, and STL files are 3D mesh models commonly used for 3D printing. To create a PDO from an STL, you typically use Pepakura Designer, which can import the mesh, unfold it into paper parts, and save the result as a .pdo file.

How stl to pdo conversion works

STL stores only the surface geometry of a model. It does not include textures, colors, materials, or assembly instructions. PDO is a Pepakura project file that stores the unfolded pattern, tabs, page layout, and related papercraft settings. Because of that, STL to PDO is not a simple one-click format conversion; it is a papercraft unfolding process performed in compatible software.

How to create a pdo file from stl

In Pepakura Designer, open the STL model, unfold it, and save the project as a PDO file:

  1. Open Pepakura Designer.
  2. Use File → Open to load the .stl file. If needed, use File → Import only if your version or workflow requires it.
  3. Check the model scale and orientation.
  4. Adjust edge lengths, seam lines, and unfolding settings if necessary.
  5. Run the unfold operation to generate the paper pattern.
  6. Save the project with File → Save As as a .pdo file.

Important notes

STL files do not preserve color or texture data, so those details will not appear in the PDO unless you add them manually in Pepakura Designer. The result also depends on mesh quality: models with holes, flipped normals, non-manifold edges, or overly dense geometry may need repair or simplification before import.

Pepakura Designer is the primary tool for creating PDO files from STL models. There is no universal direct converter that turns STL into PDO without unfolding the mesh in papercraft software.

Alternative options

If Pepakura Designer has trouble with a model, repair or simplify the STL in a 3D editor first, then try importing it again. In some workflows, converting the STL to another supported mesh format before opening it in Pepakura can help, but the final .pdo still needs to be created in Pepakura Designer or another papercraft application that supports unfolding.

Summary

STL to PDO conversion is usually done by importing the STL into Pepakura Designer, unfolding the mesh into paper parts, and saving the project as a .pdo file.
