What the USD format is

Universal Scene Description (USD) is a 3D scene format developed by Pixar for exchanging and assembling geometry, materials, lights, cameras, animation, and scene hierarchy. Common extensions include .usd, .usda (text), .usdc (binary), and .usdz (packaged assets).

USD files are created or exported by applications such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, Houdini, Pixar USD tools, and NVIDIA Omniverse. They commonly appear in visual-effects pipelines, 3D asset libraries, animation projects, AR workflows, and interchange between modeling applications. A USD file can reference external textures and other USD layers, so all referenced assets must remain available when rendering.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a 2D image format suitable for browser previews, thumbnails, documentation, product pages, and compact rendered images. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and usually produces smaller files than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality.

WEBP cannot contain USD geometry, editable materials, animation, scene hierarchy, cameras, or 3D metadata. In a 3D workflow, it is normally the output of rendering a USD scene, or a converted image texture referenced by that scene.

How to convert USD to WEBP

Using Blender

1. Open Blender and select File → Import → Universal Scene Description.
2. Choose the .usd, .usda, .usdc, or .usdz file. Keep its referenced textures and asset folders in their original relative locations.
3. Check the imported geometry, materials, camera, and lighting. Add a camera or lights if the USD scene does not contain suitable ones.
4. Open Output Properties, set the required resolution, and choose WebP as the output format if the installed Blender version provides it. Select lossy or lossless compression, quality, and RGBA or RGB color mode.
5. Choose Render → Render Image, then use Image → Save As and save the result with a .webp extension.

If Blender does not expose WEBP as a render format, render to preview.png, then encode it with Google’s WebP utility:

cwebp -q 85 preview.png -o preview.webp

Use -lossless when exact pixel preservation and transparency matter more than file size. For a lossless conversion from PNG, use:

cwebp -lossless preview.png -o preview.webp

Using Pixar USD tools

On a system with the Pixar USD command-line tools and a configured Hydra renderer, render the scene to an intermediate image:

usdrecord scene.usd preview.png

Convert that image with cwebp:

cwebp -q 85 preview.png -o preview.webp

The exact appearance depends on the available renderer, scene lights, render settings, material support, and referenced assets. If the renderer cannot resolve an asset or shader, fix those dependencies before encoding the image.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Choose the camera angle and output resolution before rendering; changing WEBP compression cannot recover geometry detail that was absent from the render. A quality setting around 80–90 is a practical starting point for lossy previews, while lossless WEBP is preferable for UI elements, technical diagrams, masks, and images with sharp text.

Transparent backgrounds require an RGBA render and a WEBP encoder that preserves alpha. Some older image viewers, 3D applications, asset-management systems, and game pipelines do not support WEBP reliably; PNG is a safer intermediate or interchange format in those cases.
