A TIFF is useful when a USD scene must become a raster image for print, image editing, archival, or software that cannot open 3D scene files. The conversion is a render of the scene, not a direct preservation of its geometry, materials, animation, or camera data.
What the USD format is
USD, or Universal Scene Description, is Pixar’s scene-description format for exchanging and assembling 3D assets. It stores geometry, transforms, materials, lights, cameras, animation, variants, payloads, and references to other assets.
USD files commonly use .usd, .usda for text, .usdc for binary data, or .usdz for packaged assets. Pixar USD tools, Houdini, Blender, Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max, NVIDIA Omniverse, and other DCC applications can create or export them. You encounter USD when receiving a complete scene, an asset library, an animation, or a referenced production scene rather than a finished image.
What the TIFF format is
TIFF is a raster-image format used for high-quality still images, print workflows, scanning, compositing, and archival output. It can store lossless compression, alpha channels, grayscale or RGB data, and higher bit depths than many ordinary web-image formats.
A TIFF contains pixels only. It does not retain USD meshes, scene hierarchy, lights, animation, variants, cameras, or editable material networks. Use it when the required result is a still image and the receiving application supports TIFF better than USD or a rendered format such as PNG or OpenEXR.
How to actually convert USD to TIFF
Using Pixar USD and ImageMagick
- Install Pixar USD with a Hydra render delegate and ImageMagick. Confirm the available options with
usdrecord --help. - Open the scene in USDView or another USD-capable application and identify the camera prim, such as
/World/Camera. Check that referenced geometry, textures, and materials are available. - Render a still image from the selected camera. For example:
usdrecord --camera /World/Camera --imageWidth 4096 scene.usd render.exr
Use the camera path and options supported by your USD build. If EXR output is unavailable, render torender.png. - Convert the rendered image to TIFF:
magick render.exr -depth 16 -compress zip render.tif
For an 8-bit PNG source, usemagick render.png -compress zip render.tif; converting it to 16-bit TIFF does not recreate lost 16-bit information.
Using Blender
- Open Blender and choose File → Import → Universal Scene Description.
- Set the active camera, frame, resolution, color management, lighting, and render engine. Cycles or Eevee may produce results different from the renderer used to author the USD scene.
- Render with Render → Render Image.
- In the Image Editor, choose Image → Save As, select TIFF, set color mode and bit depth, and save the image.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the USD file, choose TIFF as the output, start the conversion, and download the result. Because USD is a scene format, verify the rendered camera, frame, resolution, materials, and lighting before using the TIFF.
Quality and compatibility limitations
- A scene with multiple cameras requires a separate render for each desired view. An animated USD file requires selecting a frame or rendering a sequence; one TIFF represents one frame.
- Missing referenced files, external textures, unsupported shader networks, or an unavailable Hydra delegate can produce incomplete geometry, default materials, or a blank render.
- Set the final pixel dimensions before rendering. TIFF cannot add detail that was absent from the render.
- Use OpenEXR as the intermediate for HDR or wide-gamut workflows, then convert to TIFF with the required bit depth and color profile. Use ZIP or LZW compression for lossless TIFF output; avoid JPEG compression when preserving image data matters.
- Inspect transparency after conversion. Some TIFF readers ignore alpha channels or interpret premultiplied and straight alpha differently.
