A TIFF is required when an OFF mesh must be delivered as a raster image for documentation, publication, image editing, or archiving. The conversion renders the three-dimensional model from a chosen camera view; it does not preserve the editable mesh in the TIFF file.

What the OFF format is

OFF, or Object File Format, is a plain-text 3D geometry format used to store polygonal meshes. An OFF file normally contains vertex coordinates followed by polygon face definitions, and some variants include color values. It is common in academic 3D datasets, geometry-processing software, mesh demonstrations, and older modeling utilities.

OFF describes geometry rather than a finished picture: it does not normally contain a camera, lighting setup, textures, or the rendering information expected by an image editor. MeshLab is a commonly used desktop program for opening, inspecting, repairing, and rendering OFF meshes.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF is a raster image format used for print production, scanning, technical documentation, and lossless image archiving. It supports high pixel dimensions, RGB and grayscale data, alpha channels, and lossless compression such as LZW or ZIP.

TIFF cannot store an OFF mesh as an independently editable 3D object. The useful result is a rendered view of the model, such as a shaded perspective image, orthographic projection, wireframe, or silhouette.

How to convert OFF to TIFF

Using MeshLab and ImageMagick

  1. Install MeshLab and ImageMagick.
  2. In MeshLab, choose File → Import Mesh and open the .off file.
  3. Inspect the mesh and set the required view: rotate or orient the model, choose flat or smooth shading, enable the wireframe if needed, and adjust the background and lighting.
  4. Use File → Save Snapshot in MeshLab. Save a lossless intermediate image such as model.png, and set the snapshot width and height to the required output dimensions.
  5. Convert the rendered image to TIFF with ImageMagick:

magick model.png -compress LZW model.tif

Use -compress ZIP instead if the receiving application specifically prefers ZIP-compressed TIFF files. To create grayscale output, use magick model.png -colorspace Gray -compress LZW model.tif.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the OFF file, select TIFF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file. Check the resulting image because automatic rendering may choose a different camera, background, or image size than the intended presentation.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The TIFF resolution is determined by the rendered pixel dimensions, not by the number of polygons in the OFF file. Increase the snapshot width and height before conversion when the image is intended for print or close inspection; changing TIFF metadata such as DPI alone does not create additional detail.

Rendering can change the appearance of the model through camera position, lighting, shading, back-face visibility, and the handling of vertex colors. If the OFF file contains only geometry, textures cannot appear in the TIFF unless they are recreated in the rendering program.

Keep the original OFF file when later mesh editing, measurement, or a different viewpoint may be required. A TIFF contains only the selected two-dimensional view and cannot be converted back into the original topology, coordinates, or camera-independent 3D model.
