TIFF is used when a SketchUp model must be delivered as a high-resolution raster image for printing, page layout, archival, or image editing. Converting an SKP file renders its current 3D view into a flat TIFF image; the resulting file does not retain editable SketchUp geometry.

What the SKP format is

SKP is SketchUp’s native 3D project format. It stores model geometry, materials, component instances, scenes, styles, camera views, shadows, and other SketchUp project data. SketchUp, SketchUp Pro, and compatible Trimble tools create and open SKP files; architects, interior designers, engineers, contractors, and 3D artists commonly encounter them as building models or design references.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a raster image format used for print production, scanning, archival storage, and image-processing workflows. It supports high bit depths, embedded color profiles, large pixel dimensions, and lossless compression such as LZW or ZIP. TIFF is suitable when image quality matters more than small file size, but it cannot store SketchUp’s 3D objects, layers, scenes, materials, or camera controls.

How to convert SKP to TIFF

Export directly from SketchUp

  1. Open the model in SketchUp Desktop and save the project before exporting.
  2. Choose the scene or camera view to render. Set Camera → Perspective or Camera → Parallel Projection, then adjust the style, shadows, section cuts, and visible tags as required.
  3. Use File → Export → 2D Graphic.
  4. In the export dialog, select TIFF (*.tif, *.tiff) as the file type and choose a destination filename such as building-view.tif.
  5. Open Options if available. Set the pixel width and height for the intended output, enable anti-aliasing when offered, and select a transparent background only if the receiving application supports the required alpha channel.
  6. Click Export, then inspect the TIFF in an image editor or viewer to verify its dimensions, colors, line weights, and transparency.

The exact export options depend on the SketchUp edition and version. If TIFF is not listed under File → Export → 2D Graphic, export a high-resolution PNG first and convert that raster image with an installed graphics application.

Convert an exported PNG with ImageMagick

After exporting building-view.png, ImageMagick can create an uncompressed TIFF with:

magick building-view.png -compress none building-view.tif

For lossless compression and smaller files, use:

magick building-view.png -compress LZW building-view.tif

On 101convert.com, you can convert the file for free without installing software: upload the SKP, choose TIFF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The TIFF contains only the currently visible viewport, not every model view or hidden object. Export at the final required pixel dimensions; enlarging a low-resolution TIFF later cannot restore missing edge detail. For a print target, calculate the required dimensions from the physical size and resolution—for example, a 12-inch-wide image at 300 DPI requires 3600 pixels in width.

SketchUp’s export is a rasterization, so curved edges and thin lines can show aliasing at insufficient resolution. Parallel projection is usually preferable for technical elevations, while perspective projection preserves the selected 3D visual appearance. TIFF compression and alpha-channel support vary between page-layout, CAD, and image-editing applications; use LZW or ZIP for lossless compression, or uncompressed TIFF when the receiving system has strict compatibility requirements.
