What the STEP format is
STEP, usually stored with .step or .stp, is an ISO 10303 exchange format for precise 3D product data. It stores boundary-representation geometry such as faces, edges, solids, assemblies, and sometimes product metadata. Mechanical CAD systems including SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion, FreeCAD, and Creo can create or export STEP files.
You encounter STEP when receiving a model from another CAD system, exchanging parts with a manufacturer, importing supplier geometry, or transferring an assembly between engineering applications. STEP is designed for CAD interoperability, not direct display as a bitmap image.
What the TIFF format is
TIFF, stored with .tif or .tiff, is a raster image format used for technical documentation, print production, scanning, and archival images. It supports high resolution, lossless compression such as LZW or ZIP, grayscale and RGB color, and—depending on the software—multiple pages or layers.
A TIFF is useful when the recipient needs a static view that can be inserted into a report, printed, annotated, or opened by image-processing software. A TIFF cannot retain STEP features, selectable faces, parametric history, assembly relationships, or accurate 3D measurement data.
How to convert STEP to TIFF
Using FreeCAD
- Install and open FreeCAD, then choose File → Open and select the
.stepor.stpfile. - Wait for the model to load. In the Model tree, select the body or objects that should appear in the image; hide unwanted objects with the spacebar.
- Set the required view using the standard-view controls or View → Standard views. Use View → Fit all to frame the model, and choose shaded, flat-line, or wireframe display according to the intended drawing.
- Set the background, colors, and perspective in the display or view settings. Orthographic projection is generally preferable for technical documentation because it avoids perspective distortion.
- Choose View → Save image or the equivalent image-capture command in your FreeCAD version. Select TIFF as the format, specify the pixel dimensions, choose the output location, and save the result as
model.tiff. - Open
model.tiffin an image viewer or editor and verify that the model is fully visible, the line weight is readable, and the output dimensions meet the print or document requirement.
For repeatable exports, FreeCAD can also be automated through its Python console. A typical view-capture command is:
Gui.activeDocument().activeView().saveImage("model.tiff", 2400, 1800, "Current", 1)
The exact rendering and TIFF support depend on the FreeCAD and graphics-library versions. Set the camera and visibility before running the command; 2400 and 1800 are the output width and height in pixels.
Using an online converter
You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Because the result is a rendered image, select the required view, orientation, background, and resolution if the converter provides those controls, then download and inspect the TIFF output.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- Conversion is rendering, not format-preserving export. The TIFF contains pixels from one camera view, not the original STEP geometry.
- Export separate TIFF files for front, top, side, isometric, or section views when several perspectives are required. A single TIFF normally represents one view.
- Choose at least 300 dpi for ordinary print output and calculate pixel dimensions from the physical size. For example, an 8-inch-wide image at 300 dpi requires 2400 pixels horizontally.
- Use lossless TIFF compression such as LZW or ZIP when available. Avoid JPEG compression inside TIFF for thin edges, annotations, and precise linework.
- Small STEP features can disappear at low resolution or with shaded rendering. Increase the pixel dimensions, use an orthographic view, and enable edge lines when the image is intended as a technical illustration.
- STEP files may contain multiple solids, hidden bodies, construction geometry, or assembly components. Check object visibility before export because the renderer may include everything currently visible.
- TIFF viewers do not all support every TIFF variant, including CMYK, floating-point data, multipage files, or unusual compression. For broad compatibility, use a single-page RGB or grayscale TIFF with LZW or ZIP compression.
- TIFF does not automatically provide CAD dimensions or scale. Add dimensions in a CAD drawing workflow before rendering, or annotate the resulting image in an image editor while retaining the original STEP file for measurement.
