Free online STEP to GLB converter

Web viewers, AR viewers, game-engine pipelines, and product configurators commonly accept .glb but cannot render engineering STEP data directly. The conversion creates a display mesh from the CAD model and packages it for runtime delivery.

What STEP files contain

STEP, formally ISO 10303, is a neutral CAD exchange format used by mechanical designers, manufacturers, suppliers, and CAM workflows. Files normally use .step or .stp and can store precise boundary-representation (B-rep) solids and surfaces, curves, assembly structure, names, colors, units, and—depending on the application protocol—product-manufacturing information.

CAD systems including SOLIDWORKS, CATIA, Siemens NX, PTC Creo, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion, Onshape, and FreeCAD can import or export STEP. It is intended to exchange and preserve engineering geometry, not to deliver real-time graphics.

What GLB files contain

GLB is the binary container form of glTF 2.0. A .glb file packages scene data, triangle meshes, PBR materials, textures, node hierarchy, cameras, and animations into one file; some features, such as punctual lights, use glTF extensions.

GLB is used by browser-based glTF viewers, Three.js and Babylon.js applications, Android Scene Viewer, AR pipelines, and many 3D asset workflows. Its single-file structure avoids the separate JSON, buffer, and image files often associated with a .gltf delivery.

Convert a STEP file to GLB

1. Open the STEP model in its source CAD system or a CAD viewer first. Confirm that all required assembly components are present and that suppressed or hidden parts are intentionally excluded.
2. For a browser-based conversion, upload the .step or .stp file to the converter on 101convert.com, choose GLB as the output, run the conversion, and download the resulting .glb. This does not require local software.
3. For local conversion with explicit mesh settings, use a desktop CAD translation tool that supports both STEP import and glTF/GLB export, such as CAD Exchanger. Open the model, inspect the assembly, set tessellation quality if offered, then export as glTF binary (.glb) through File → Export.
4. Load the GLB in the intended application before delivery. Check part visibility, assembly hierarchy, orientation, scale, colors, and the appearance of holes, fillets, cylinders, and other curved features.

Mesh quality and file size

GLB cannot retain STEP solids, analytic surfaces, parametric features, or editable CAD history. The converter tessellates the model into triangles, making the result suitable for visualization rather than dimension-driven editing, machining, tolerance inspection, or reliable engineering measurement.

Tessellation tolerance determines the balance between detail and size. A coarse mesh makes round features visibly faceted; a very fine mesh increases triangle count, memory use, download size, and mobile loading time. Use the lowest mesh density that keeps important curves smooth at the closest expected viewing distance.

Large assemblies may need simplification before export: remove internal parts, small fasteners, hidden hardware, tiny holes, and other geometry that does not affect the displayed model. Geometry reduction after conversion can also help, but aggressive decimation can distort silhouettes and create shading artifacts.

Compatibility details

STEP color assignments and assembly names can transfer, but results depend on the STEP application protocol and the converter. Native CAD appearances rarely map exactly to glTF's physically based material model; verify base colors, transparency, and metallic or roughness values in the destination viewer.

PMI, dimensions, GD&T, construction geometry, mates, feature trees, and most manufacturing metadata generally do not transfer to GLB. Preserve the original STEP file when engineering data must remain available.

glTF uses meters for linear distances. STEP files carry their own unit definitions, usually millimeters or inches in mechanical work, but an importer or exporter can still apply an unexpected scale. If a model appears 1,000 times too large or too small, correct the export or import scale and recheck it against a known dimension.
