Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A BMP image must be turned into a 3D scene before it can become a GLB file. This conversion is useful when a game engine, WebGL viewer, AR application, or 3D editor requires a portable glTF binary containing a mesh and its texture rather than a standalone bitmap.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that stores pixels, commonly with 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA color. Windows Paint, image editors, scanners, CAD tools, and older texture workflows create BMP files; in 3D modeling, BMP usually appears as a reference image, decal, or material texture.

A BMP contains no vertices, faces, camera, lights, or surface depth. It therefore cannot become a complete 3D object without choosing how the image will be represented in a scene.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the single-file binary form of glTF 2.0. It can contain meshes, materials, textures, node transforms, cameras, animations, and sometimes lights, making it suitable for browser viewers, game engines, AR applications, and 3D asset exchange.

Unlike a separate .gltf file with external resources, a GLB normally packages the scene and embedded image textures into one file. The format does not preserve BMP as a BMP resource; the texture is usually converted to PNG or JPEG inside the exported asset.

How to actually convert BMP to GLB

Make a flat textured plane in Blender

  1. Install Blender and open a new scene.
  2. Add a plane with Add → Mesh → Plane. Rotate it if the target application uses a different front axis.
  3. Create a material in the Material Properties panel and set its surface to Principled BSDF.
  4. In the Shader Editor, add an Image Texture node, click Open, and select image.bmp. Connect its Color output to the Principled BSDF Base Color input. If the BMP has transparency, connect its Alpha output to the Alpha input and set the material's blend mode to an alpha-compatible option.
  5. Switch to Material Preview or Rendered view and check the image orientation and UV placement. A default plane already has usable 0–1 UV coordinates.
  6. Use File → External Data → Pack Resources so Blender keeps the image available for export.
  7. Select the plane and choose File → Export → glTF 2.0.
  8. Set Format to GLB, enable Selected Objects if only the plane should be exported, and enable Include → Materials. Click Export glTF 2.0 and save image.glb.

For a quicker setup, Blender's built-in or community-supported “Import Images as Planes” workflow creates a plane, UVs, and an image material from image.bmp; then use File → Export → glTF 2.0 with the format set to GLB.

Create a relief or terrain mesh from the BMP

A grayscale BMP can drive geometry only after being interpreted as a heightmap. In Blender, add a sufficiently subdivided plane, add a Displace modifier, create a texture from heightmap.bmp, set the texture type to Image or Movie, and adjust Strength and Midlevel. Apply the modifier before exporting if the destination does not evaluate Blender modifiers.

For a full 3D reconstruction of an object shown in a BMP, one image is generally insufficient. Use photogrammetry, sculpting, or manual modeling to produce the mesh, then use the BMP as a reference or texture before exporting the result.

Convert without installing software

You can use the free converter on 101convert.com when its BMP-to-GLB workflow matches the intended result. Check the generated GLB in a viewer afterward, because image-to-3D services differ in whether they create a textured plane, a heightmap relief, or an inferred 3D model.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • No automatic depth: wrapping a BMP onto a plane produces a flat asset; it does not recover hidden sides or real-world dimensions.
  • Texture conversion: BMP is often converted to PNG for lossless transparency or JPEG for smaller opaque textures. JPEG removes alpha and introduces compression artifacts.
  • Texture size: resize very large images to a target such as 2048×2048 or 4096×4096 when the receiving engine has memory or GPU limits.
  • Transparency: verify the GLB viewer's alpha mode. Transparent pixels may render opaque if the material's alpha mode or image color channel was not exported correctly.
  • Orientation: glTF uses meters as its customary unit and a right-handed coordinate system. Confirm scale, front direction, and up axis in the target application.
  • Validation: open the exported file in a glTF viewer or validator and confirm that the mesh, material, UVs, and embedded texture are present before delivery.
