Model type
A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.
Model size (longest side)
Height
Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.
Mesh detail
More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.
Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

What the BMP format is
BMP, or Bitmap Image File, stores pixel data with little or no compression. It commonly contains screenshots, scanned artwork, diagrams, texture drafts, and images exported by Microsoft Paint, older Windows graphics tools, CAD utilities, and some 3D applications.
BMP files can use several color depths, including 24-bit RGB and 32-bit RGBA, but they are usually much larger than PNG or JPEG files. BMP is not a 3D model format: it contains no vertices, faces, UV coordinates, materials, lighting, or animation.
What the GLTF format is
GLTF is a 3D scene format designed for real-time rendering and efficient delivery to browsers, game engines, AR applications, and modeling software. A GLTF asset can contain meshes, node hierarchies, cameras, animations, physically based materials, and references to texture images.
A .gltf file normally works with separate binary and image files, while .glb packages the scene, geometry, and supported textures into one binary file. GLTF texture images should generally be PNG or JPEG rather than BMP.
How to convert BMP to GLTF
Use Blender when the BMP needs to become part of a real 3D asset. The practical conversion is to place the bitmap on a mesh, assign it as a material texture, convert the image to a GLTF-compatible format, and export the scene.
- Open Blender and create or import the geometry that should use the image. For a flat display, add a plane through Add → Mesh → Plane.
- Open the Shading workspace, create a material, and connect an
Image Texturenode to the material's Base Color input. - Open the BMP in the image node. If the image contains transparency, connect its alpha output to the Principled BSDF Alpha input and set the material's blend mode to an appropriate alpha mode.
- For reliable GLTF compatibility, open the image in Blender's Image Editor and use Image → Save As to save it as
texture.pngortexture.jpg. PNG preserves transparency; JPEG produces smaller files but discards transparency and uses lossy compression. - Replace the material's BMP reference with the converted PNG or JPEG, then verify the UV mapping and appearance in Material Preview or Rendered view.
- Choose File → Export → glTF 2.0. Select
GLBto produce one portable file, or chooseglTF Separatewhen separate JSON, binary, and image files are preferable. - Enable Selected Objects if only the textured object should be exported. Use Include → Custom Properties only when the target application needs them, and enable texture embedding when exporting a single-file GLB.
For a basic image-to-scene conversion without installing software, 101convert.com can convert files online for free. A direct conversion cannot infer meaningful 3D shape from ordinary BMP pixels, so check whether the resulting asset is a textured plane or another automatically generated scene rather than a reconstructed model.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- Changing BMP to GLTF does not increase image resolution or add depth. A photograph or drawing remains a 2D texture unless geometry, a camera projection, or a separate 3D reconstruction process is supplied.
- Use PNG when the source has transparent pixels or sharp line art. Use JPEG only for opaque photographic textures where some compression loss is acceptable.
- Large BMP dimensions increase texture memory after export. Resize the image to the target platform's texture limit before exporting; common real-time limits are 2048 or 4096 pixels per side, but the engine determines the actual limit.
- GLTF viewers and engines usually support the core metallic-roughness material model, but Blender-specific shader nodes, procedural textures, and some modifiers may not export. Apply or bake effects that must appear in the target application.
- Test the exported
.gltfwith every referenced file present, or use.glbto avoid broken relative texture paths during sharing.
