Model type
A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.
Model size (longest side)
Height
Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.
Mesh detail
More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.
Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

What the TGA format is
TGA, also called Truevision TGA or TARGA, is a raster image format commonly used for 3D textures, including color maps, transparency maps, normal maps, and other material data. It supports grayscale, 16-bit, 24-bit, and 32-bit images, with optional alpha channels and RLE compression.
3D applications and texture tools such as Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Maya, Substance 3D Painter, Photoshop, and GIMP can create or edit TGA files. You may encounter TGA assets in older game projects, texture libraries, visual-effects workflows, and exported material folders.
What the GLTF format is
glTF is a Khronos Group format for transmitting 3D scenes and models. It can contain meshes, node hierarchies, cameras, animations, materials, and references to image textures. The format is designed for real-time display in browsers, game engines, AR applications, and 3D viewers.
A .gltf file is normally accompanied by a binary .bin file and separate image files. A .glb file is the single-file binary form and can embed geometry, materials, and textures. glTF commonly uses PNG or JPEG textures; TGA images are generally converted during export.
How to actually convert TGA to GLTF
Use Blender when the TGA is a texture for an existing model or a mesh that you can create. The workflow is texture import, material assignment, and glTF export:
- Open Blender and create or import the mesh that the TGA should cover. A TGA contains no vertices, faces, UV coordinates, or camera data.
- Open the Shading workspace, select the mesh, and create or select a material.
- Add an
Image Texturenode, click Open, and select the.tgafile. Connect its Color output to the Principled BSDF Base Color input. - For transparency, connect the image Alpha output to the Principled BSDF Alpha input. In the material settings, set Settings → Surface Render Method to
DitheredorBlended, depending on the Blender version and the required result. - For a normal-map TGA, set the Image Texture node to
Non-Color, connect it to aNormal Mapnode, and connect that node to the Principled BSDF Normal input. Do not treat roughness, metallic, or ambient-occlusion maps as sRGB color images. - Check the UV layout in the UV Editing workspace and verify the material in Material Preview or Rendered view.
- Choose File → Export → glTF 2.0. Select
GLBfor one self-contained file, orglTF Separatewhen you need editable external textures and a separate.binfile. - Enable Include → Selected Objects if only the chosen mesh should be exported, then export the file. Blender converts unsupported texture formats to formats appropriate for glTF during export; verify the resulting GLB or glTF in a second viewer.
You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Because the source is an image rather than a 3D scene, check what geometry the service generates or requires; an image-to-model result may be only a textured plane and will not recreate a missing mesh.
Quality and compatibility limits
- The conversion cannot reconstruct 3D shape, depth, UV coordinates, rigging, animation, or material intent from pixels in a TGA. Use the original model if those elements are required.
- Export to
GLBwhen portability matters. Separate.gltfexports require the JSON file, the binary buffer, and every referenced texture to remain together with unchanged relative paths. - Use PNG for lossless textures that contain transparency or sharp masks. JPEG can reduce file size for opaque color maps but introduces compression artifacts.
- Preserve alpha only when the destination viewer supports the selected glTF alpha mode. Masked transparency uses a cutoff threshold; blended transparency can sort imperfectly in overlapping surfaces.
- Large TGA dimensions increase memory use after export. Resize textures to the resolution needed by the target application, and test mipmapping and filtering in that application.
- glTF stores material parameters rather than every feature of a native 3D package. Layered TGA workflows, custom shader channels, and unsupported procedural effects may need to be baked into images before export.
