Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A PSD must be converted when a 3D application, WebGL viewer, game engine, or AR device accepts glTF but not Photoshop documents. Because PSD stores 2D artwork rather than a general 3D scene, the conversion normally creates image textures and requires separate 3D geometry.

What the PSD format is

PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s layered raster format. It stores pixels, transparency, masks, adjustment layers, text layers, paths, and sometimes smart objects in an editable document.

Photoshop creates PSD files, and they commonly appear in texture-painting, concept-art, UI, and material workflows. A PSD can contain artwork intended for a 3D model, but its layers do not automatically represent meshes, cameras, lights, or physically based materials in the glTF sense.

What the GLTF format is

glTF is a 3D scene format designed for efficient delivery and loading. A glTF asset can contain meshes, node hierarchies, cameras, animations, materials, skinning data, and references to texture images.

The .gltf form usually keeps JSON, binary geometry, and image textures as separate files. The .glb form packages the scene and its resources into one binary file, which is often easier to share or upload. glTF materials generally use PBR properties such as base color, metallic, roughness, normal, and occlusion maps.

How to actually convert PSD to GLTF

Use Photoshop or GIMP to prepare the PSD and Blender to create or apply the 3D scene. This is the reliable workflow because no file-format conversion can infer a complete 3D model from ordinary 2D layers.

  1. Open the PSD in Photoshop and preserve the original as a working copy.
  2. Hide guides, annotations, unused layers, and background elements that should not appear on the model.
  3. Export each required texture from File → Export → Export As. Use PNG for transparency or lossless color, and JPEG only for opaque photographic textures. Name maps according to their role, such as basecolor.png, roughness.png, or normal.png.
  4. Open Blender and create or import the target mesh. For a flat PSD design, add a plane; for a product, character, or environment, model or import the geometry separately.
  5. In the Shader Editor, create a Principled BSDF material. Connect the exported base-color image to Base Color, an optional alpha channel to Alpha, and additional prepared maps to their corresponding inputs. Set non-color maps such as roughness and normal images to Non-Color in the image texture settings.
  6. For transparent artwork, set the material’s blend mode to an appropriate alpha mode, such as Alpha Hashed or Alpha Blend, and connect the image alpha output.
  7. Preview the scene in Blender, verify UV placement, normals, texture resolution, scale, and animation, then choose File → Export → glTF 2.0.
  8. Choose GLB to produce one portable file, or choose glTF Separate when separate JSON, binary, and image files are preferable. Enable selected-object export if the scene contains unrelated objects, and enable image embedding when the selected export mode supports it.

For a quick browser-based attempt, you can submit the file to the free converter on 101convert.com. A result from a generic converter may only flatten the PSD or use it as a single texture; it cannot reliably invent missing mesh geometry or correctly assign Photoshop-specific layer effects.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Layer groups, adjustment layers, blend modes, editable text, smart objects, and Photoshop filters usually require rasterization before export. Exporting a flattened texture preserves the visible appearance but removes independent layer editing.

glTF does not preserve the PSD’s layer structure. It also does not guarantee identical appearance for Photoshop blend modes, color-management settings, procedural effects, or unsupported shader features. Check the exported asset in a glTF viewer or the target engine rather than relying only on Blender’s viewport.

Keep texture dimensions within the target platform’s limits, use power-of-two sizes when required by older hardware, and avoid unnecessarily large images. A .glb file is simpler to distribute, while separate .gltf resources are easier to replace during texture iteration.
