What the PSD format is

PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s native layered image format. Photoshop creates PSD files, and applications such as GIMP can open and edit many PSD features. A PSD may contain raster layers, masks, transparency, text, adjustment layers, paths, and effects.

In 3D modeling, PSD files commonly hold texture artwork, decals, reference images, grayscale height maps, or 2D logos. None of these elements is automatically interpreted as vertices, faces, thickness, or physical dimensions.

What the 3MF format is

3MF is a ZIP-based 3D manufacturing format containing mesh geometry and optional units, colors, materials, assemblies, and print-related metadata. It is designed for transferring printable models between modeling software and slicers.

Compared with STL, 3MF can store more model and project information in one package. A slicer can still ignore optional colors, materials, or settings if its 3MF implementation does not support them.

How to actually convert PSD to 3MF

First convert the image content into 3D geometry. The following workflow creates a raised relief from a grayscale PSD.

1. Open the PSD in Photoshop or GIMP. Keep only the visible artwork, remove unwanted background areas, and make the image grayscale if brightness is intended to control height.
2. Export a flattened image as heightmap.png using File → Export → Export As. Use a lossless format; JPEG compression can create unwanted surface steps.
3. Open Blender and create a plane. Give it the required physical width and depth, then subdivide it into enough faces to represent the image resolution.
4. Use a Displace modifier with heightmap.png as its texture. Set UV coordinates, adjust Strength to control relief height, and set Midlevel to define the neutral surface.
5. Add a Solidify modifier or model a base beneath the relief. Apply the modifiers and inspect the result in solid view. Fix holes, disconnected pieces, reversed normals, and excessively thin walls before export.
6. Export the finished mesh as model.stl through File → Export → STL.
7. Open model.stl in PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, or another slicer that supports 3MF. Check scale and orientation, then use File → Save Project As and save model.3mf.

For a flat logo or lettering, trace the artwork as vector paths in Inkscape, export logo.svg, import the SVG into Blender as curves, set curve extrusion, convert the curves to a mesh, and export through the same STL-to-3MF step. This produces cleaner edges than height-map displacement.

An automated service can only produce a useful result if it explicitly supports raster-to-3D relief or vector extrusion; a generic PSD-to-3MF conversion cannot infer the intended thickness, scale, base, or geometry from Photoshop layers.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• PSD layers, masks, editable text, adjustment layers, and Photoshop effects are not preserved as editable features in 3MF. They must be flattened or converted into geometry.
• Relief quality depends on image resolution and mesh subdivision. Too few faces create stepped surfaces; excessive displacement can create self-intersections and non-manifold geometry.
• A grayscale height map defines relative elevation, not a real-world thickness. Set the model dimensions and maximum relief height in Blender or the slicer.
• Transparent PSD areas need explicit treatment. Make them background, remove them, or use an alpha-derived mask; otherwise they may become unintended solid geometry.
• 3MF may store colors and materials, but ordinary single-extruder printers generally use the mesh for slicing and do not reproduce Photoshop texture detail or layered artwork.
