Free online DDS to 3MF converter

A DDS file is a texture image, while a 3MF file contains 3D model geometry and printing data. Converting one to the other is therefore not a direct format change: you need a 3D model, apply the DDS texture to it, and then export that model as 3MF.

What the DDS format is

DDS, or DirectDraw Surface, is a raster texture format used in 3D graphics. It stores color maps and may include alpha transparency, mipmaps, and GPU-compressed data such as BC1, BC3, or BC7.

You commonly encounter DDS files in game assets, real-time rendering projects, 3D engines, and texture libraries. DirectXTex, GIMP with DDS support, Adobe Photoshop with a DDS plug-in, Substance tools, and game engines can create or export them. A DDS file normally contains surface appearance only; it does not contain vertices, faces, dimensions, or a printable solid.

What the 3MF format is

3MF is a ZIP-based 3D manufacturing format containing one or more meshes, units, object relationships, and optional material or print metadata. CAD applications, Blender, Microsoft 3D Builder, and slicers such as PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer can create or read it.

Compared with STL, 3MF can preserve units, multiple objects, colors, materials, and production settings in one package. It is intended for transferring models to 3D-printing software, not for storing a standalone texture image.

How to actually convert DDS to 3MF

When you have a 3D model and a DDS texture

1. Convert the DDS texture to a broadly supported image format. With Microsoft DirectXTex, run texconv -ft png -y texture.dds. This creates texture.png; use -ft tga instead if your modeling software handles TGA more reliably.
2. Open the corresponding mesh in Blender with File → Import. The model must have UV coordinates for the texture to map correctly.
3. In the Shader Editor, connect texture.png through an Image Texture node to the Principled BSDF Base Color input. Connect its alpha channel to Alpha only when the source texture actually uses transparency, then set the material's blend mode as required.
4. Check the model in Material Preview or Rendered view. Fix missing UVs, incorrect orientation, transparency, and color-space settings before export. Use sRGB for ordinary color textures; use Non-Color for data maps such as roughness or normals.
5. Make the mesh printable with 3D Print Toolbox → Check All. Repair non-manifold edges, reversed normals, holes, and intersecting shells, and apply scale with Object → Apply → Scale.
6. Export the geometry with File → Export → 3MF, enable the required objects, and save a file such as model.3mf.
7. Open model.3mf in the target slicer and verify dimensions, object placement, color, and material assignments before printing.

When the DDS is the only file

A DDS alone cannot be converted into a meaningful 3MF because it contains no 3D geometry. Find the original mesh, such as an OBJ, FBX, glTF, BLEND, or game asset, then use the DDS as its texture. Converting the image into a height map can produce approximate relief geometry, but it requires a separate modeling step and does not reconstruct the original object.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Most 3D printers use mesh geometry rather than surface textures. Many slicers ignore UV textures, embedded images, and advanced 3MF material extensions, so a textured viewport model may print as a single-color object. For reliable color printing, use a 3MF workflow explicitly supported by the target slicer and printer, or assign per-face colors and materials that the slicer recognizes.

DDS compression can introduce block artifacts, and converting to PNG does not restore lost detail. Texture resolution, UV layout, and the exported mesh's scale remain separate from one another. Validate the final 3MF in the intended slicer because different applications vary in their support for textures, transparency, multiple materials, and units.
