Free online TGA to 3MF converter

A TGA file is a 2D texture, while a 3MF file is a package for 3D model geometry and related print data. The conversion is needed when a TGA image must be applied to a 3D object and the finished object must be delivered to a 3MF-compatible slicer or modeling application.

What the TGA format is

TGA, or Truevision TGA, is a raster image format used in 3D workflows for color maps, alpha masks, decals, sprites, and rendered images. It supports RGB and RGBA pixels, including transparency, and may use uncompressed or RLE-compressed storage.

3D applications and game engines commonly create or consume TGA textures. Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Maya, Unreal Engine, Unity, Photoshop, and GIMP can open or export TGA files. You usually encounter one alongside a model file such as .obj, .fbx, or .blend, rather than as a standalone 3D object.

What the 3MF format is

3MF is a ZIP-based 3D manufacturing format that packages mesh geometry, units, object relationships, print settings, materials, colors, and, where supported, texture resources. It is used by slicers and 3D-printing software such as PrusaSlicer, UltiMaker Cura, Bambu Studio, and Microsoft 3D Builder.

Compared with STL, 3MF can preserve multiple objects, units, color information, and printer-oriented metadata in one package. It does not turn a flat image into a volumetric or surface mesh automatically.

How to actually convert TGA to 3MF

There is no meaningful direct conversion from an image-only TGA into a 3MF model. Create or obtain a 3D mesh, apply the TGA as its texture, then export or package that mesh as 3MF.

1. Open Blender and create or import the 3D model that should receive the image.
2. In the Shader Editor, create an Image Texture node and use Open to select the .tga file. Connect its Color output to the material’s Base Color input; connect its Alpha output to the material alpha input only when the image contains transparency.
3. Assign UV coordinates through UV Editing → Unwrap or use the model’s existing UV map. Check the result in Material Preview.
4. Save the Blender project so the texture reference and UV mapping remain available.
5. Export the geometry through File → Export → Wavefront (.obj) if the installed Blender version or another application provides the final 3MF export. Keep the generated .obj, .mtl, and TGA texture together.
6. Open the OBJ in Microsoft 3D Builder, PrusaSlicer, or another 3MF-capable desktop application. Verify scale, orientation, mesh errors, and material appearance, then use File → Save as or the application’s 3MF export command to create .3mf.

Some Blender installations provide a 3MF exporter through an extension. If available, use File → Export → 3MF after checking the model and material settings. For a no-install attempt, 101convert.com can be used for free, but an online converter cannot infer 3D geometry from a TGA; a direct image-to-3MF result is therefore unsupported or not useful unless the service specifically asks for a separate model.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A texture changes surface appearance, not the model’s shape. A TGA showing a brick wall will not create brick relief, thickness, or a printable object. Geometry must come from a mesh, height map workflow, or procedural modeling step.

Texture preservation is less consistent than geometry preservation. Many slicers ignore UV textures and display only solid colors or per-face colors, and ordinary FDM printing cannot reproduce a texture unless the printer and slicer support color printing. For reliable single-color printing, use the TGA only as a modeling reference or convert its visual information into geometry.

For textured 3MF output, keep the texture path valid during export, use a material and texture workflow supported by the receiving application, and reopen the saved 3MF to test it. Converting TGA to PNG before import can improve compatibility, but it does not add 3D information.
