Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A WRL file is required by some legacy VRML viewers, CAD tools, and 3D asset pipelines, while a TGA file normally contains only a raster texture. Converting one directly cannot create 3D geometry; the practical workflow is to apply the TGA to a model or plane and export that scene as VRML, usually with the texture converted to PNG or JPEG for compatibility.

What the TGA format is

TGA, or Truevision TGA, is a raster image format frequently used for 3D textures, rendered images, sprites, masks, and material maps. It supports 8-, 16-, 24-, and 32-bit images, optional run-length compression, and an alpha channel in common 32-bit files. Autodesk 3ds Max, Maya, Blender, game engines, texture-painting applications, and older rendering tools can create or load TGA files.

A TGA stores pixels, not vertices, faces, cameras, lights, or UV geometry. Its alpha channel may contain transparency information, but it does not define a 3D surface by itself.

What the WRL format is

WRL is the usual filename extension for a VRML scene, most commonly VRML 2.0 or VRML97. A WRL file can describe polygon meshes, transformations, viewpoints, lights, materials, animation nodes, and external image textures. It is readable as text and can be opened by VRML viewers and several older CAD, simulation, and visualization programs.

WRL is useful when a target application specifically requires VRML or when a simple, inspectable scene format is needed. It is an older interchange format with limited support in current 3D software; OBJ, glTF, or FBX is usually preferable when the receiving application accepts them.

How to actually convert TGA to WRL

For a textured plane or image card

  1. Convert the TGA to a broadly supported texture format. With ImageMagick, run magick input.tga texture.png. Use PNG to preserve lossless detail and alpha transparency; use JPEG only when an opaque, smaller texture is acceptable.
  2. Create a text file named image-plane.wrl in the same directory as texture.png.
  3. Put the following VRML 2.0 scene in the file:
#VRML V2.0 utf8
Transform {
  children [
    Shape {
      appearance Appearance {
        texture ImageTexture { url ["texture.png"] }
      }
      geometry IndexedFaceSet {
        coord Coordinate {
          point [ -1 0 -1, 1 0 -1, 1 0 1, -1 0 1 ]
        }
        texCoord TextureCoordinate {
          point [ 0 0, 1 0, 1 1, 0 1 ]
        }
        coordIndex [ 0, 1, 2, 3, -1 ]
        texCoordIndex [ 0, 1, 2, 3, -1 ]
      }
    }
  ]
}

Open image-plane.wrl in a VRML viewer. The scene contains a square plane with the converted image mapped to it. Keep the image and WRL file together, or replace the relative URL with an absolute path; relative paths are more portable.

For an existing 3D model

  1. Open the mesh in a 3D editor such as Blender or 3ds Max.
  2. Load the TGA as the model's image texture and verify the UV map, material assignment, color space, and alpha mode.
  3. Export the scene through the application's VRML or VRML97 exporter, using File → Export or the equivalent menu. Enable texture export or copy the converted PNG/JPEG beside the resulting WRL file.
  4. Open the WRL in a VRML viewer and check face orientation, texture coordinates, transparency, scale, and missing external files.

If no geometry exists, a 3D editor can create a plane, assign the TGA-derived texture, and export that plane. An automatic converter cannot reliably infer a complete 3D model from an ordinary texture image.

Online conversion

You can try the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. For this particular format pair, check the output carefully: a service may create a minimal textured surface, reject the file, or produce a WRL without usable geometry because TGA is an image format and WRL is a scene format.

Quality and compatibility limitations

VRML viewers do not consistently support TGA in an ImageTexture node, so PNG or JPEG is safer. Converting TGA to JPEG removes transparency and introduces lossy compression; PNG preserves the TGA's pixel data and alpha channel.

Texture dimensions, UV orientation, and alpha behavior can change between applications. VRML commonly interprets the texture origin differently from some image or 3D tools, so an upside-down result may require vertically flipping the image or changing the UV coordinates. A WRL export can also omit unsupported shader nodes, normal maps, animation data, or application-specific material settings.
