What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google for web graphics. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, so browsers and tools such as Chrome, GIMP, Photoshop, Blender, and other asset editors commonly create or save it. In 3D work, a WEBP file may be used as a reference image, decal, or material texture, but it does not store vertices, faces, normals, cameras, or lights.

What the WRL format is

WRL is the usual filename extension for a VRML scene, most often VRML 97. A WRL file can describe polygon meshes, transformations, materials, lights, viewpoints, and image textures in a text-based scene format. It is useful for legacy CAD viewers, educational 3D software, simulation systems, and applications that support VRML but not newer formats such as glTF.

WRL is portable and human-readable, but its texture support depends on the viewer. Standard VRML implementations commonly handle JPEG and PNG more reliably than WEBP.

How to actually convert WEBP to WRL

Because there is no geometry in the source, the reliable workflow is to convert the image to a broadly supported texture format and create a WRL scene containing a textured plane.

1. Convert the image to PNG with ImageMagick:

Alternatively, open the file in GIMP and use File → Export As, then save it as texture.png.

2. Create a text file named image-plane.wrl in the same folder as texture.png, using this VRML 97 content:

Open image-plane.wrl in a VRML-capable application such as FreeWRL, view3dscene, or a compatible CAD viewer. The sample creates a two-by-1.5-unit plane; change the vertex coordinates to match the WEBP aspect ratio and required scene scale.

For a real 3D object, use the WEBP as a modeling reference in Blender or another 3D editor, build or import the mesh, assign the converted PNG as its material texture, and export the scene with a VRML 97 exporter. Exporter availability varies by application version, so verify that the resulting file is explicitly VRML 97 and that its texture path is relative or embedded as required by the target program.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The conversion cannot infer depth, topology, or object boundaries from a flat image. The generated plane is 3D scene geometry, but it is not a reconstructed model. Transparent WEBP pixels may also require an Transparency node or exporter-specific alpha settings in WRL.

Keep texture.png beside the WRL file when using the relative URL shown above. Moving only the WRL file breaks the texture link. Use PNG for transparency and lossless detail; use JPEG when a smaller texture is more important and the image has no transparency. Test the file in the exact target viewer because VRML loaders differ in support for texture paths, alpha, image dimensions, and material settings.
