Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A WEBP image may need to become an OBJ mesh when a 3D application, CAD tool, game engine, or fabrication workflow accepts geometry instead of a raster texture. The conversion is not a direct format change: WEBP stores pixels, while OBJ stores vertices, faces, UV coordinates, and optional material references.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format commonly used for photographs, illustrations, material textures, thumbnails, and rendered previews. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. Image editors, web applications, browsers, render pipelines, and 3D asset websites commonly create or distribute WEBP files.

In 3D work, a WEBP file is usually a texture, reference image, color map, roughness map, or height map rather than a model. It contains no vertices, surfaces, scale, camera position, or depth information.

What the OBJ format is

OBJ is a plain-text 3D geometry format supported by Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, MeshLab, many CAD applications, game tools, and slicers. It stores polygon vertices, texture coordinates, normals, and faces; a separate .mtl file can describe materials and reference image textures.

OBJ is useful for exchanging static polygon meshes because it is simple and widely supported. It does not preserve animation, rigging, modifiers, procedural materials, or scene hierarchy reliably. An OBJ exported from a single WEBP can therefore represent only a constructed flat surface or an image-derived relief, not a complete inferred object.

How to actually convert WEBP to OBJ

Make a flat textured plane in Blender

  1. Open Blender and enable the Import Images as Planes add-on or extension if it is not already available.
  2. Choose File → Import → Images as Planes and select the WEBP file.
  3. Blender creates a plane with UV coordinates and an image material. Adjust the plane dimensions if a specific real-world aspect ratio is required.
  4. For broader texture compatibility, convert the WEBP separately to PNG or JPEG, replace the image in the material, and keep the image beside the exported model.
  5. Select the plane and choose File → Export → Wavefront (.obj). Enable Selection Only if the OBJ must contain no other scene objects, then export the file.

The result is a flat OBJ mesh carrying the WEBP image as a texture reference. It is suitable for displaying the image on a 3D plane, not for producing solid geometry.

Create a relief or height-map mesh

  1. In Blender, add a plane with Add → Mesh → Plane and give it UV coordinates with UV → Unwrap.
  2. Subdivide the plane repeatedly, or use a sufficiently dense grid. A displacement modifier cannot reproduce image detail that the mesh does not have enough vertices to represent.
  3. Add a Displace modifier, create a texture, select the WEBP under the texture's image settings, and set the displacement Strength and Midlevel. A grayscale image produces the most predictable height result.
  4. Apply the modifier after checking the relief scale and surface direction. Recalculate normals if faces appear dark or inverted.
  5. Choose File → Export → Wavefront (.obj), enable Selection Only, and export the mesh.

For a colorized relief, keep the WEBP as a material texture or replace it with PNG/JPEG when the destination software does not support WEBP. You can also convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software, but raster-to-mesh conversion still requires modeling or displacement settings.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A normal WEBP photograph cannot be converted into an accurate 3D object because one image does not provide reliable depth, hidden surfaces, or physical dimensions. Photogrammetry or multi-view reconstruction requires several overlapping photographs and produces a different workflow from texture mapping.

For a relief, image resolution affects texture detail while mesh density affects geometric detail. Increasing WEBP resolution alone does not improve the OBJ surface if the plane has too few vertices; increasing subdivision raises polygon count and export size.

OBJ material support depends on the receiving program. Keep the exported .obj, .mtl, and texture image together, use relative paths, and prefer PNG or JPEG when the target software cannot load WEBP references. Export normals and UVs when those options are available, and verify the result by reopening the OBJ in a separate viewer.
