Max to obj file conversion

The most reliable way to convert .max files to .obj is to use the original 3ds Max application, because the .max format is proprietary and depends on the 3ds Max version and the plugins installed when the file was saved.

In practice, a .max file usually cannot be converted directly by third-party tools unless they can read that exact scene data. If you have access to 3ds Max, open the file and export it through File → Export → Export Selected or File → Export → Export, then choose Wavefront OBJ as the output format.

Before exporting, check the scene for unsupported features. OBJ is a geometry-focused format, so it does not preserve many 3D scene elements such as animation, cameras, lights, rigging, or advanced material/shader setups. UVs and basic materials may transfer, but textures often need to be exported separately and reassigned in the target application.

If you do not have 3ds Max, some conversion tools may help only in limited cases. PolyTrans|CAD+DCC and similar converters can sometimes import .max files, but success depends on the file version and the plugins used in the original scene. For many .max files, the practical workaround is to ask the original creator to export the model to OBJ, FBX, or another exchange format from 3ds Max.

Tip: If you need to preserve more scene data, FBX is often a better intermediate format than OBJ. Use OBJ when you only need mesh geometry and basic UVs.
